As per the title if I wanted to build a straight folding rig what is the best GPU to install?
Helpful if you can tell me why too please.

Thanks.

Depends how much £ you want to spend, its gona be the best gpu you can afford and more importantly afford to keep running 24/7 365, also best water cooled to keep the noise down and the heat.
2 or even 3 or 4 gpus would give the highest PPD but id say buy the fastest card and add to it in future, my titan x is pretty bad ass :)

a 290x should be good, I have a 290 tri x and some work units are 220'00 ppd others less

if electric costs are no issue, add another 290x or if it is a gtx 970 / 980

check this data base of what current gpus at what speed can do PPD WISE

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vcVoSVtamcoGj5sFfvKF_XlvuviWWveJIg_iZ8U2bf0/pub?output=html

bottom of the table somebody had 1 million ppd from a titan x :o

you've done 90 work units but your points are VERY low , you must have not added your passkey, get one below

Ppd are low because that's a Mac folding on just an i5 CPU.
My pc chucks out around 280k ppd folding on a different team.
I'm looking to build a matx system for the fun of it and that will also be folding 24/7 but not used for any serious gaming.
I have a spare R9 270x lying about so might use that but was just wondering what the other options were.

750ti is good ppd for the money at about 50K ppd each

Otherwise just get GTX970's although the 960's seem to cost 50% more than the 750Ti but giving more than 50% increase in PPD
