What's the best motherboard/CPU/RAM upgrade for me??

Dagnamit you two!!

Now you've got me thinking about a totally unneeded GPU upgrade! :D

Is the 1070 the minimum I should be looking at - at circa £400 new it's a bit on the high side! Will changing to something a bit lower down the spectrum still give a decent boost from my 970? (1050, 1060 or even one of the AMD cards?? )

Hehe - don't upgrade if your card is giving you all the performance you need.

But, for 1440p gaming (BenQ GW2765HT?) the GTX 1070 is considered the ideal starting point - i can play most games on ULTRA and at 1440p i don't need much AA etc.. but on the whole i bump everything up to max and adjust if necessary.

The problem is the present GFX card prices are nuts - i picked up my MSI GTX 1070 Armour OC for £330 in ~March and have since watched the cards slowly creep up and up in price. The cheaper 1080s are looking relatively good value now in comparison :/

As your present card is doing all that you ask - i, personally, would wait for the Vega release and the bitcoin craze to die down and see if the prices of GFX cards settles down - at the present time you would certainly be paying premium prices due to lack of choice (i.e. the Radeon cards have shot up due to demand and this seems to have given nVidia the opportunity to push their prices up too :/. This will hopefully settle down - and you may see the prices come down.)

Buy when you're ready and feel the need - you've boosted your system which is hopefully paying dividends for a relatively small amount. If you could wait for a cheapish GTX 1070 down the line - second hand may be a good idea as the card will still be under warranty - you will have saved some serious money for a year or two...

Right now I would wait and see what vega brings to the table, see if amd are going to disrupt the gpu market like the bombshell they dropped with ryzen. However what I can tell you from experience as someone who has been fortunate enough to have the following gpu setups in recent history - 970 / 970 sli / 1060(3gbver) / 1070 / 1080 / 1080ti and 1080ti sli the 1060 3gb version that I actually gifted to @humbug whom tested it against his 970 found it was iirc the same performance in some areas or slower in others. Both gpus ended up being sold and a 1070 bought and again iirc it blew him away in contrast to the 970/1060. He plays at 1440p dsr I think.

The reason. I specified the vram on the 1060 is the 3gb version is about 10% slower than the 6gb for some reason the nerfed the core.

One other thing to note either way is in my eyes every gpu is an upgrade from a 970. I personally hate those cards and their silly vram. Have you concidered using MM for a gpu?

Thanks guys...

I'm going to hang on for a while to see what happens in the next few months - really no need I guess!
