I read up a bit ago about some belkin twisted or something but can't seem to find where I saw it now!? I'm looking for about 25-30 meters worth.

Anyone got any good views on any cables?

Just run Ethernet from your modem/router to wherever you need to, less likely to give you any grief.

AOL told me that RJ11 isn't really much good over 15-20m.

I have a huge wireless deadspot in my bedroom due to the metal beams above and below it. So I put an ethernet cable up into the roof and a switch in my bedroom, very cheap and works well.

Ethernet cable is so so cheap now and it doesn't matter whether you use stright or crossover as all modern (ish) routers know the difference and auto change settings to work with it.

i have the router in my bedroom - center of house for better wireless around the house, i have had an RJ11 cable up to my room for the last 5 years but it was a cheap old standard cable back then and wanted to replace it with a new better cable, the cable i have at the moment is 30meters

any ideas on decent cables?

Use Cat5e and put a secondary hardwired telephone socket in your room. Will give you next to no loss on the cable as well. And Would be easier to fit.

What he said. Unless the Cat5e is too big to run along the wall etc, you will get a much better signal using Cat5e than 30m of RJ11 for a DSL router.

Just use a pair from a standard cat5 cable, jobs a good'un.

Oh and just to jump on the AOL slagwagon, they charged an elderly client of mine for 7 months of broadband at his old address before they got around to moving it to his new house, GJ.

If I got cat5e cable how would I connect it up? The router is in my bed room, if I used this cat5e cable through the cavity to the loft and then to my bedroom would this mean I would have to have the router at the front door where the phone line is? Would it be better getting 30 meter phone wire up to my room?

I'm a bit confused!?

RJ11 refers to the wiring and module on the end of the cable, CAT5E refers to the cable itself. You could run a CAT5E cable wired to RJ11, which is what Sp00n is refering to, but I am not sure of the maximum length that would work.

I'd just run a Cat5 from the router by your door to your room, can always put a switch on the end of that if you need more ports in your room.

I think i'm getting abit confused now lol

If i got a cat5e cable and plugged it into the micro filter at the front door and then led it upto my bedroom and plugged the other end of the cat5e cable into the adsl line port on my router, would this work?

If you terminate it correctly it will yes, but why you would want to is a bit beyond me when you could just leave the router where it is with a really short bit of cable into your microfilter and then just use regular Ethernet to get it to your room.

Yes this will work, but you will degrade the quality of your line and in turn reduce your sync speed.

General rule of thumb is to try and always plug the router in the main BT socket and if you can, the test socket (not really applicable for the average home user).

As standard, no. Cat5e 30m cables that you will most likely buy off the shelf will be terminated with RJ45. You'll either need to buy 30m of plain Cat5, and put the ends on yourself (you'll need the relevant RJ11 plug for either side, and a stamper tool), or buy Cat5e and cut the ends off and replace with RJ11.

The only problem with having it at the front door is that the wireless won't reach to the top rooms of the house as it's a thick walled old house, i could probably get N network card.

If I put the router at the front door then, would a standard eithernet cable RJ45 be the best option?

Thanks fir all this info by the way! Most helpfull

If you do a harwired extension from the master socket (using cat5e) you can leep the router in your room and also gain a phone socket.
