My mums car is a Subaru L series sports wagon and it hates hills and most other things that require power. The Air con gives the engine a big hit aswell.

I have noticed that in the morning when the air is cold it is more responsive and quicker and powerfull.

What would be the cheapest, best and easyest way to get it to have more power?

Here is a picture of the type of car it is. Its 15 years old :D

We do have a bullbar but its nothing like the ugly thing on these pics

cheapest and easiest will be to sell it and get another car tbh.

you could get a cold air induction kit with a new exaust and air filter but in reality it will probably give you less than 10% power increase.

taking the heavy bull bar off will probably have a bigger effect!

rip out an excess weight.

costs zero. can save up to around 10%-15% if you are brutal. therefore 10-15% better power to weight. :)

I cant really start to hack into the car because its my mums, she wont sell it either. shes attached to it  The bull bar is made of aluminium so shouldnt weigh to much.
How much are cold air induction kits?

Edit:What could i rip out that she wont kill me because she wouldnt notice?

if she likes it, she's guna have to accept it slow as!
if she wants faster sell it and get a new one. You will spend more money than its worth trying to make it go faster. the chip, exhaust air filter route will give a little, but not cheap and your looking at 10% to 20% (20 being quite optomistic). I have done that to my car, and it makes a good difference, but not massive! it wont make a slow car fast.

It doesnt really need to be fast but it would be nice to have it more responsive and to hold speed when it goes up hills.

Go on a diet. Aside from spending some stupid money, you aint gonna make much difference to that lump.

Plus, this not being YOUR car, are you sure your mum would appreciate you modifying it.

She wouldnt mind a little extra power.
I wouldnt spend much on it at all really.

Does anyone know what engine is in it? if it was the boxer lump fomp the scoobie you 'could' strap a turbo on it ;)

your mum will never go for that though.

Im not sure what engine it is tbh. Its only a 1.8 though:(
Were boxers even made in 1991 for scoobs?
An air intake might help because its got more power and pic up if its cold outside

No it wont, an induction kit will not make it any more powerful to the point where youll say "the change the kit has done means i now like the car". you may notice a difference, but it will be minimal and you will still lack any power.

Either get a new car or nothing imo, there are no miracle solutions otherwise the car industry would have already implemented them.

Pointless, if you want any real power you need to spend a fair amount of money on it, since the car is worth nowt, you would be better taking that money and buying something else.

Try it on a tank of premium petrol if you havent already and see if it makes any difference. It made a massive difference to the Mazda hire car we had when we were across a year or so ago. If i recall correctly there seems to be a bigger difference in RON rating between normal and premium petrol in Australia than there is in the UK.

Normal unleaded can be as low as 91 and premium as high as 98 in Australia.

So should i try putting 98 RON in it? Its not going to kill it will it?
