Whats the big deal with Halo?

a story which lasts 5-6 hours? thats what i dont get.

most fps have well balanced weapons etc, i guess halo is just the cream of the crop for balanced and developed multiplayer console first persons.. otherwise compared to a lot of pc games it just looks pretty average to us.
Problem with PC games are that we get so many better than average FPS that they dont develop enough of a community, or they contain nothing new which we are always craving for.

I would say the opposite, the PC gets a lot of average or less FPS and very few good ones, but that's all opinion, so that doesn't matter.

I understand peoples comments in regards to weapon balance, however I definitely feel that Halo3 has the best balance. In other games there are always weapons people will use, ignoring the others...

Counter-Strike: AWP/Colt/AK-47
Quake 3: Rocket Launcher / Railgun
UT: Rocket Launcher / Flak Cannon / Shock Rifle

I actually am struggling to think of many other major online shooters (obviously BF2, but people all use vehicles).

In terms of gameplay time, 5-6 hours isn't a lot, but I've heard Halo3 is more like 8, and more if you play on Legendary. I always said well before launch that Halo3 was more about multiplayer anyway, so I don't know why people seem so shocked at the Single-Player of it.
Some of the best games of all time are short games (Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Max Payne 2 as examples.)

I've put way over 15 hours into Legendary and still haven't finished the game. Some of that was spent doing the same levels a few times, but the length and challenge is spot on. If someone finishes Halo in 8 hours then they're playing on too easy a setting and need to grow a pair ;)

For what it's worth, I haven't enjoyed a single player game as much as this since the OoT and Golden Eye days.

You forgot TF2 mate, although not technically out yet, the Beta is and its bloody marvelous! :D

You're forgetting call of duty, rainbow 6 series, medal of honour series, stalker, farcry, painkiller, fear, half life series, enemy territory, ghost recon and a few more, could also add quake 4 onto that list. These games are still supported today, what fps other than halo is there on a console that's still supported and widely played?

Console gamers only know halo.

There is a huge choice on the pc that titles like UT have to beat down in order to gain the main top spots, which make them actual cream of the crop, whereas the case with halo, you may have one or two more games it has to compete with, but nothing to sweat about, this could be why ppl are happy with the low console fps standard.

Which always sounds good untill you take into account the huge number of gamers who play games on the pc and consoles yet still choose Halo. I'm one of them btw. Only few of the games you mentioned i'd consider good enough to require a 'beat down' - especially when it comes to multiplayer - and most of them are so long in the tooth they fly on my old coal powered pc.

Call of Duty was outstanding, CoD 2 was better on consoles and CoD3 (although made by Treyarch) sucked.
Rainbow Six was awesome, unfortunately its many sequels never (though Vegas was a nice return).
Medal of Honour was excellent on consoles, Allied Assault was excellent on PC. However the numerous others on PC sucked (unless you are wanting me to mention the awards winners Frontline and Big Red One on consoles...).
FarCry was outstanding, however it had a poor multiplayer and editors, so the mod support wasn't thriving.
Painkiller was a mindnumbing blast which only entertained when you stake people to walls.
Fear was a massive letdown. It also ran better on Xbox360... but it still wasn't great.
Half Life is probably the greatest game of all time, I wasn't much of a fan of the physics showcase that's HL2 though. Of course, HL wasn't popular online... it's mod community was though.
Enemy Territory was a great add-on to a very average game (Return to Castle Wolfenstein - and yes, I know it was released seperately in the end).
Ghost Recons newer incarnations are vastly superior on consoles than their PC equivalents.
Quake 4 sucked ass, it was a major let down to the greatness that were it's forerunners, Quakes 1 through 3. Online was better, but still poor... it was also released on Xbox360.

So aside from the MANY games you named there that are not only on Xbox360 but PLAY better on Xbox360 I would say there are more, including The Darkness which is one of the finest FPS' I've played in the last 5-10 years.

Console gamers only know halo.
Wrong, and a mile wide too. I'm a gamer. Not a Console gamer, not a PC gamer. I have no boundaries. I own a PC, Xbox360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite and a PSP.
So trying to pigeon hole me won't work, not only because I feel I play on a level playing field by supporting all systems, I also buy all my games, play a lot of games, aim to work IN games and I have a very, very good knowledge of games.

Odd that something like Halo seems to smash so many records with new releases, comparative to anything on the PC bar maybe World of Warcraft.
I can only think that you are actually quite ignorant outside the small borders of PC gaming in which you play.

Take that back! RTCW is the best multiplayer fps and clan game i've played. Much better than ET (which I also thought was great).

Well, I really can't be bothered with any of this arguing anymore. I'm sick of all these console/Halo fanboys spouting utter tosh and refusing to take on board any points made in their opposition.

I don't care what anyone says, how many copies it has sold, how many high scoring reviews it got, Halo 3 is a mediocre game without a shred of innovation or originality. It is without a doubt the most overhyped and overrated game in history. That is all.

Get off your high horse. You obviously have different priorities in fps. I like the emphasis Halo has on melee, grenades and vehicles. I also enjoy the challenge the single player campaign offers. Other fps don't tick these boxes for me.

I've yet to read a decent criticism.

huh hl2 was pretty popular online, its not a massively established game just because you love or hate kinda thing, its a completely different experience with the mavity guns etc..

Quake4 never sucked, it just wasnt an exact copy of quake3, but why should it be, quake3 still has a decent base of players afaik..

If that's meant in regards to my retort above, then in what ways do you feel my comments weren't justified. I feel all of mine were.

It would apear there's only one person refusing to take onboard any points here.

im going to give halo3 a try later, just got a 360 yest, wasnt really a fan of the 1st 2 at all though, my mates all got wet over them but really, i just didnt get what the point was, i thought the story was rubbish too.

Most overhyped game ever cant be halo3 tbh, its bioshock!

HL2 doesn't have an online mode does it. I believe that's counter-strike source, a sequel to a modification - none first party, to Valve.
Half-Life did have an online mode, but that wasn't popular.

My dislike for Half-Life 2 is purely because it overplayed physics. All it did was say 'Hey, look at what we can do with physics here', 'look what you can do with physics there...', 'You can throw stuff around with physics here...'. It continued like that throughout the game, losing a lot of the character the first one had.
Every preview movie for HL2 focused purely on physics.

Now all of this might have been special if Max Payne 2 hadn't released with the same level of physics (although muted and not over the top all the time) weeks earlier.

Quake4 never sucked, it just wasnt an exact copy of quake3, but why should it be, quake3 still has a decent base of players afaik..
Quake4 was never meant to be like Quake3, it was a sequel to Quake 2.

theres plenty more than 2 now :) the reason it always was about physics because that was the games real gimmick, otherwise it would have been 2 similar to everything else.
I think the majority found the physics gun fun, launching a toilet with a crossbow arrow right behind it :D

Ah, Cant ever remember playing Q2, wasnt really into my FPS back then :)

I played Halo on the PC and would rate it as one of, if not my favourite game. I just thought it was great!

Played Halo 2 on Xbox and enjoyed it, but didn't think it was as good as the first.

Just got Halo 3 but yet to start it!
