Someone wanting to spend 1200/1400 what is the go to cpu ? Is it still the i5 12600k?

A few months ago that was the one always suggested in builds for gaming at that price

13600K is better at current prices, but if you can find a 12600K near (or under) £250 then I'd still go with that. AM5 CPUs also had a big price cut, so they're more competitive now.

So which cpu would you say is the best performance vs cost currently ? CPUs although old like the 5600x in terms of performance for gaming are they no longer in the conversation for builds of around 1200?

For gaming the 5600 non-X is probably the best value CPU right now, since it's enough to keep up with everything except the highest-end GPUs and can then dump the rest into the graphics card.

If a cheaper CPU will get you a better GPU then that's generally the best option for a gaming PC.
