What’s the difference between LBA & CHS?

Hey guys,

Just installed a new Samsung backup drive and I noticed that in the POST screen there’s ‘CHS’ next to the drive details as opposed to ‘LBA’ being next to all my other disks :)

What’s the reason//difference?

Cheers,

SW.

Has it done something daft and specified itself in the BIOS with a set number of cylinders, heads and sectors rather than letting the BIOS detect it?
Just copying some stuff on it atm, but as soon as it finishes - I'll reboot and check it out :)

I take it should be 'LBA' then?

Cheers,

SW.

Dunno, just a guess. The thing is CHS is the old fashioned way of addressing a disk location by Cylinder, Head and Sector but it only supports disks up to 8Gb. LBA (Logical Block Addressing) should be required for anything larger.
