Whats the difference in idiot terms between a Desktop Router and a Desktop Switch ?

A switch connects devices on the same network. A router connects devices across different networks.

So a switch could not be used to share computers with a cable internet connection ?

No, you would have to have a router plugged into your cable modem and then you could plug a switch into your router if you don't have enough ports spare on the router
