whilst remanising in a pub with some old mates about our antics in motors when we passed our tests, early 90's bc (before cameras) i asked the question " whats the dumbest thing youve done in a car", and if im honest i scared myself just thingking about it.
mine was totaly stupid and one of those that looking back on i was very lucky to have survived, and to walk away scot free was a total miricale!
picture the scene 3.00 in the morning, twisty country lane, hump back bridge, mums polo coupe G40, and a mate egging me on..........

hmmm we hit it at 80, i thought the road after the hump went left, it didnt it went right, i took off landed arround 20 meters down the road with two wheels (near side) riding up a wall, the car then tipped over on to its side for arround 30 meters before hitting a telegraph pole and rolling on its roof across the road before coming to rest on its side in a ditch (upside down)

neither or us had a scratch, there wasnt a dent free pannel on the car, the chassis had twisted and we had to get out the boot.

what a dumb ass.

When I had my old car...

On the way home from work (when I used to work in a pub) one rainy Sunday night (~1am) I thought I'd try and get a nice handbrake enduced drift round a bend into my estate.

Only, I didn't expect it to snap the way it did and I went straight into a wall :o

Luckily, I only grazed the bumper and pushed the bracket in a bit. Nothing a bit of T-cut didn't sort.

Needless to say, I haven't done a handbrake turn since.

Dumbest thing I've done in a car was a blond called Katy.

Dumbest thing my mates have done in a car was powering up the A1 from Newcastle to Morpeth at 3am with two people on the roof with their legs in though the sunroof. One of the guys was videoing it.

The other guy, without the camera, tried to sit up and was obviously caught by the wind resistance; he was pushed back down onto the roof, but his foot came up and through the windscreen.

Utterly, utterly insane.

Aged 19, thought it would be amusing to try to chase after a police car (like you do) down a bendy B road.
The road went down to the right (the car nicely compresses there for lots of grip), then up to the left before flattening out (meaning that the car goes light over the brow of the hill). The big problem was simply downright stupidity of trying to drive over the brow of the hill at around 60mph, despite knowing that the car would go light and the road was bumpy.
Unsurprisingly the car gets the better of my lack of ability and we slid sideways for around 60m before being stopped by a tree. Interesting that the tree seemed fine, though the boot on my car had been stuffed in by a good foot.
So, tree was OK, car was a write off and I got a serious blow to the ego which is a great way to learn to take it easy. No one was injured in the making of the accident.

Mine's nothing particularly dangerous.

When I first passed I had use of my mums car for a bit and used to hoon around with mates at lunch breaks and free periods at 6th form.

I decided it'd be a good idea to take it down some bridal paths that were mainly pretty grassy and smooth. It had been a bit damn as it rained *** last night, but not too bad. Came over a hill and saw water at the bottom of the but thought I could get through it - I was wrong. We got stuck in the middle of it. I got absolutely covered in mud trying to get us out which between us we eventually managed, before giving the car a damn good cleaning before I had to pick mum up later in the day!

Hand brake turn in a sloping car park which was iced over, didn't realise it was iced over until the car skidded the length of it and stopped about an inch from a wall.

I did an ebrake turn in the snow and when I came around the corner I almost hit a mountain lion! Maybe not the dumbest thing I've ever done but that certainly gave me a fright.

Far too fast towards a hump which was followed by a fairly steep dip in the road, car took off big time and somehow managed to control it upon landing, probably luck more than anything else. This was in my old K11 Micra, many years ago.

Tried showing an ex of mine who thought she could drive quick what driving quick was all about. Left her for dust on one of those late summer nights where as the air starts to cool you get a nice layer of moisture over the road. Got a bit squirmy round a bend, over corrected, over corrected agian third times the charm... **** corner! Braked hard with the car still a little uneasy, locked up on one of those large square manhole covers and slid straight up onto the grass verge.

Luckily it was a wide flat verge and I just slid sideways to a halt. Felt a bit of a boob tbh :(

Cold rainy night, leaves on road, 3.00 am 50-60 mph, kink in road (not really a corner), bald back tyres................................Oak tree :D

tried to correct the slide but had brand new toyo's on the front and bald budgets on the back, it was only going one way with the front gripping hard and the back... well not. had it booked in for the 2 rear tyres the next day as well

I walked away with whiplash and a bruised arm, my mate was asleep across the back seat and was fine, not a scratch. Had he been in passenger seat I would say he wouldent be with us, car was a mess, so much so that when the police turned up they asked where the driver was, "has he been taken away by ambulence?" "no, I'm here" :)

Happy days :D

Mine was a classic, I had not long passed my test and was driving to a lifeboat call out. I got to the bit of road by the side of the station at a fair old speed, chucked the wheel round to turn into a parking space on the side of the road, turned the engine off and pulled the keys out while still moving, turned the wheel again to straiten up and park, steering lock on, crashed into the side of a sand dune.

I made the crew though and dind not damage my car so all was OK

Joyriding an escort 1.7TD pick up van around a field when I was 16 with a mate. Went down a dirt track, sweeping left corner @ 65mph lost the slide and when straight through a fence. Panicked, stuck it in reverse then knocked a wall down. The wall is still broken to this day. Wrote the van off shortly after by making a ramp and nose diving it into the ground at 40.

Ripping through a potato field with 5 or 6 mates in and on the car, all pretty hammered, sideways into a ditch. Had to bump it out but everything was OK. Pretty stupid really, but loads of fun.
