Whats the hottest a CPU should run at?

It really depends on the particular CPU tbh, I have seen i7 chips running happily into the 80s, but I'm pretty sure you don't want to do that with AM3 chips (or Core 2s for that matter).

If you want to stay on the safe side, look up the manufacturers product sheets and see what maximums they recommend.

As Above,
It depends on the CPU manufacturer etc.
With AMD cpus they generally have a specific temperature written on the box, however i normally say that anywhere over 55 is too hot for an amd pc. However i do run a very loud pc due to the amount of fans.
As for intels i cannot comment from personal experience but mid 80's seems to be fine for them.
This will change depending on the exact model of CPU though from each manufactures, but AMD generally has a lower TDP.

Like the other mention above, different cpu's have different max temp's. Which cpu are you after.

I personally would not go above 75c ~ on both of them.

I run my old Q6600 at 3.4ghz ~ and max temps were around (from memory) 70c ~

I wouldnt have wanted my old q6600 above 75c, at 3.8ghz it maxed out at 68-68-62-62, albeit both it and my TRUE were lapped and cooled by 2 x 2000 rpm fans. Current i7 920 at 4ghz hits 76-71-69-68, (same cooler) this is getting a wee bit hot for my liking.

Is this alright then?

a C1 stepping 9550 Core Quad...what temps should be ok? I idle in the high 40's or 50's :(

I think the old phenoms are the same as the new phenoms, 62 degrees. What's your load temps? You can't really damage the CPU. It will shut off before it can do damage to it. :)

Well according to the Intel Documents, for a 105W processor (such as the Q6600) the Max temp is 62.2c. However, I dont know if that is for the cores or the actual CPU. I noticed that when my cores were in the 60s, my CPU was still around the mid 40s.
