In the olympus add the 45 mm is stated as being good for portraits.
Is it true that 45mm in M4/3 is equiv to 90 in 35mm terms so wouldn't this be considered too long?
Thank you.

90mm on a 35mm camera is a superb focal length for portraiture as it has little to no distortion and compresses the background nicely for better separation.

There are some "no no's" though, such as using wide focal lengths (35 and below) at close range for headshots. Some even argue that 50mm for headshots also isn't flattering, but theres differences of opinion on that.

No, using an 85mm prime for portraits is pretty much accepted as being 'the law'. ;):D

The olympus 45mm is designed to plug that exact gap in the lens lineup.

James does that mean using a Fuji x100 you don't do close range head shots with that, more for street yes?
Cheers

You can, but it often won't be flattering. With a 35mm focal length on 35mm film/full frame camera's, the effect isn't too bad if you are further away from the subject, but then it won't be just a head shot. If you are right in front of someone though and going for literally head and shoulders max, you'll stretch their face on it.

For street photography, that's not really an issue, so yeah its better for that. You can't go wrong with that 45mm (90 on FF/35mm) focal length though.
