Whats the most depressing song....

"Depressing" music is one of those genres/styles I just don't get. I mean quite a few of the songs mentioned here are simply what I would call 'good', 'emotive', 'powerful' etc, but not depressing.

"Fade to Black" by Metallica for example. I love the outro (5min+) to that song, and find it hugely uplifting. "Iris" is a beautiful track and it certainly doesn't make me feel down.

I think maybe people associate certain pieces of music with depression because they happened to listen to it at a time when they were feeling depressed - i.e. it's not the fact that the music is intrinsically depressing, it's more a question of it stirring up past memories and emotions.

Some bands get branded as depressing, such as Radiohead and The Smiths. So why don't they make me feel depressed?

But music is a art form is it not? And it provokes different emotions and reactions from different people.

Well that is my understanding of it :)

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares To You, might be a bit cliché but I think it's a great song and she sings it very well.

Alanis Morissette - Simple Together
Alanis Morissette - At That Particular Time
(plus countless other Morissette songs :p)

Pearl Jam - Crazy Mary
King Crimson - Epitaph
Floyd - Wish You Were Here (Depressing for me anyway).

Tom Waits- Mr. Henry
Eels - electro-shock blues
Eels - ant farm
Aphex Twins - Iz-Us
Aphex Twin - Hy A Scullyas Lyf A Dhagrow
(lots more aphex)
Godspeed you black emperor - 1-02 Atomic Clock _ Chart #3 _ World
Squarepusher - Tommib
Radiohead - Idioteque
Radiohead - Worrywort
Smiths - Sing me to sleep

It's late, thats all without looking through mp3s etc.

Gloomy Sunday - it's reknowned for being found on record players after people have committed suicide. I got hold of a copy and I can see why they did it!

Oh and very good call. I have a copy of the Billie holliday recording (re-issue, but not re-mastered) on vinyl, and it is a bit sad, but not the saddest billie holliday song :).
