whats the point of a file server

Ask away, only way you'll learn ;)

Going back on topic, I would recommend you go down the extra hard drive route for now, as it doesn't seem like you really need this file server

i was making the server mainly for experience but i will leave it for now and read up about what they can do extra :D

His name is comp builder and he doesnt even know what a pci slot is

edit: oh i just read the other posts

i built one out of some spare parts just lying around and initially used it for storage only but now have it set up with active directory and a dhcp server and isa2004 . I don't need all of this but it is worth doing if you are interested in learning.

Would you be able to run games off a file server, if you had a gigabit link between client/server?

Just out of interest really, the bandwidth should easily be enough, right?

You could easily do it of a 10mb connection no worries, you can run games from a 256k internet connection so a LAN has no worries.

The PC would have to be of a high enough spec in CPU and RAM probably with decent hard drives to host a demanding game, graphics never come into servers.

3700+ at 3ghz, with 2gb odd ram is what I use, handles anything I have ever wanted to do the past month without batting an eyelid. Running Ubuntu. :)

Ive got a spare socket 939 board and the 3700+'s are only £60 odd at the moment so I will eventually make myself a fileserver. What ive wanted to know is - if I go gigabit a 10,000 RPM drive to 10,000 RPM drive across the network would be faster wouldnt it? Because at the moment the hard drives are limiting the speed the file can transfer across the network on gigabit.

Ive always wanted to make my own server ever since owning an old compaq proliant ML370 :) Then I killed it :(

And yes I do a lot of file transfering from different pc's in the house across ethernet mostly.

Thx for the help,

Now my time for the grilling. :o

What are the brown slots underneath the PCI slots? I took apart an old P1 a while ago and they were in there too. I'm assuming the precursor to PCI?

Yeh, they're ISA or Industry Standard Architecture, the precursor to pci.

Got RAID 5 SCSI on my file server and redundant psus + UPS, major cooling and locked away in the closet so no noise, makes me data feel safe :D

my server acts as a file server, exchange client and dns.

U really need to think weather u have a need for one or not

I've got my laser printer linked to my file server, means my main machine doesn't have to be on if I want to print from my laptop, which is handy.

print servers for the win.

but then why arn't your PCs running 24/7 with folding@home on anyway?
