hi, i've just 'upgraded' my GF's very old computer from a 1.4ghz P4 CPU to a 2.4ghz P4 on a MSI 845Pro (MS-6391) Mobo, very old i know but i dont know who else to ask, i updated the MS bios using the tools i got off their website.

i used their Fuzzy Logic 4 tool to 'Auto Overclock' the CPU but when i run CPUZ i get these results...

i cant understand how i got a Core value of 1.8Ghz instead of the Stock 2.4Ghz...

i have switched the CMOS jump over a couple of times, but no such luck, still 1.8Ghz, i also tried overclocking via the BIOS with a x18 Mulitiplier and got a successful boot of 125 FSB and 1.525 Vcore.


this is my very first dip in to Overclocking, i know all the risks and have tried to follow guides on here, but couldnt get to stock values via the BIOS

CPU-Z certainly recognizes the processor correctly. Does the core speed vary when running applications etc? and then drop down when your not using it?
 
The rated bus is 533 IRC.. and the P4 bus is quad pumped.

therefore 533/4 would also be -+=133fsb

It looks like the bios has incorrect settings or its using some sort of speed step, not that I think P4s had that. Its most probally the auto clock programm you have tried.

EDIT- It should boot fine without adjusting the voltage.
 
yeah i didnt realise what you said, i realise it should have a 133FSB, but in Bios after i do the CMOS jumper, its still stays at a stock of 100Mhz with the 18x multiplier.

i thought you meant DRAM, which i changed from 100 to 133, and nothing changed in CPUZ
 
any idea how to get it back to stock settings.

i went from 100mhz to 125mhz without altering the voltage, any bus or voltage adjustments after that did nothing

The only 2.4ghz P4 is supports is the oldest one...

For that to run at stock you would need 100fsb*24
Its obvious you dont have that one and you have one of the newer P4s which run with a multiplier of 18

Basically you mainboard cannot give a FSB above 100. Therefore the fastest you can run your new chip at is what you have it on. Your board is not compatible with that CPU and is affectivly running it the fastest it can.
 
just went in to BIOS like i had done before, changed the Bus speed from 100 to 125 and booted fine, CPU-Z now reads i have a core of 2.2Ghz without touching anything else. are you sure i cant get anything more out of the CPU?

One in bold. The no means it wont work. Im guessing this because CPUz is displaying it set at a 18X multiplier, which that chip requires.

Has a multiplier of 24. You 'could' try and change the multiplier in the bios from 18 to 24.
This however isnt something you can 'Normally' change as it is CPU related, which makes me think you have the X18 multiplier chip meaning its incompatible...

Its all confusing.
 
To get more speed out of it you NEED to up the FSB. To run the chip at stock you need to change the 100/125 figure to 133. As you mainboards manual states it 'shouldnt' boot at 133 but its worth a shot!

If you cant increase that number or it fails then there isnt anything you can do to alter the speed. unless you can actually change the number and get instablities then you could change the the Vcore and other settings but tbh its probaly not worth that much hassle.
 
i tried at 133 on the overclocking tool MSI gave me, but it just crashed the PC and rebooted. i could try it in the Bios, but i had earlier with no success, worth another shot.

how could i find a P4 3.2Ghz 400FSB with the 24x multiplier :( i got this 1 off ebay lol
 
That one i couldnt tell you, but if your quick there is a bundle going cheap in 10mins.

Search for 2.4ghz p4 ;)
the other option and easiest is to get another mainboard
 
You need to find a p4 with the fsb of 400 not 533. Ive just scanned the bay and i cant find anything apart from the newer ones, as said a new mainboard may be the best bet, or a bundle (theres a couple on there)
 
well considering i'd have to pay for a new Mobo, aswell as a couple of sticks of ram, this thing's only got 256mb of RAM, been trying to get some off eBay, watched a couple but went for over £10 each, of which i cannot afford.

im just gonna bring my old PC for my GF to use, 3.2Ghz P4, its about 4-5 years old, so just before Duel Cores was released.
