Whats the trick to the tuniq tower 120?

hmmm looks like a defo lap of cpu and hs needed for intel and tuniq!

Would you not think that the company selling chips and heatsinks should do perfect machine lapping:confused: i mean leaders in the game top end money then we have to mess about with sand paper:(

my tuniq tower sits sideways as apposed to everyone elses pics, and i get solid 40 degrees C running 2.8ghz (1.8ghz standard).

had to cut it with a dremel to get it to fit (i didnt do this)

no complaints here.

Well, promised I'd update. Zalman 9500LED now fitted. With the additional side fan in my case...it's performing BETTER than the Tuniq.

61//59/61/59 (sometimes peaking at 62) temps while priming small fft. The increased airflow has likely helped, but I think that highlights that the Tuniq isn't always quite as good as its made out to be; the weaker cooler with the additional case cooling is beating the Tuniq by 3-4 degrees at load, and a bit more at idle.

I have now fitted my True (lapped as good as I can do) Temps have dropped by 4c, with a 1400rpm fan.

I have good airflow as taking the side of the case does not drop temps at all.

But my PWM gets hotter as the Tuniqs fan helped I think keep the temps a bit lower.

Mmmm, the pwm was another reason I went for the Zalman; well rated, imo quieter than the Tuniq, but due to the circular arrangement of the fins, air does get directed over my IP35's board heatsinks which is helping regulate system temps. Will be interested to see what my temps are like in a couple of weeks when my AS5 has settled in :)

Look now Core Temp 0.96.1 is out the M0 steppings Tj.max has now changed again 85c so thats going to lower my temps even more. Looks like the Tuniq was not at fault. I wish this would have came out last friday.

Clairvoyant: Are you able to lap the Tuniq and re-test with it? Seems unfair lapping the TRUE after you got it and comparing it to the unlapped Tuniq?

Alexrose1uk: Again, are you able to retest using the Tuniq with the additional fan that you've added (which could easily account for a few degrees).

Ideally I'd ask for the average of three mounts and three runs of testing like I would do, but I understand that's too much for most people.

I don't know why the Tuniq is subject to such negativity tbh, maybe it's because of it's previous success and it's been built up just a little too much. It's a quality heatsink, with an all-inclusive bundle at a price that doesn't break the bank. The TRUE is probably better, I'll admit that, but I don't think it's worth the extra price.

The main question is, what version of coretemp is correct.

The Tuniq has a very flat base to start, and the True has not.

Now there was 2-4c difference in the temps on core temp 9.6. The tuniq was at 72c. Now as I and many others on the net coould not understand if the CPU was that hot. Why were the heat pipes and base of the tuniq so cool. The only way I could get them to heat up was to stop the fan.

Now i thought maybe there are some faulty tuniqs out there.

So I stupidly ordered the TRUE, yes I said stupidly. As the True was the same, pipes were cool to the touch, and the temps were almost the same.

So I thought the tuniq was not wrong, and maybe it is coretemp, as others had been saying.

Then low and behold a new version came out, temps dropped to what I would call normal for the oc I have.

So if the new core temp was out a few days earlier, I would not have bought a TRUE as the extra £ over the tuniq is not worth a couple of c.

Alexrose1uk: Again, are you able to retest using the Tuniq with the additional fan that you've added (which could easily account for a few degrees).

Unfortunately not, the additional fan doesnt fit in the case with the Tuniq installed, its [The Tuniq] is too large, my case isnt wide enough, or I would have had it there in the first place. After fitting the smaller Zalman though with the additional fan its getting lower temps (and has allowed me to push my OC further), which given its quieter I'm happy with. I fitted the Tuniq 5+ times trying to see if the thermal paste was applied wrongly, and in the end the zalman and extra fan have beaten it on first installation. I agree its a shame about the Tuniq, and you're probably right, it might be too much of a reputation thing hindering it now, it is a nice price given it's reputation, thats why I chose it, but the Zalman seems more suited to the task, at least with my particular system.

I found it tricky to fit, used a thin spread of AS5, Tuniq has fitted flush, fortunatley the Antec900 case has 2x120mm fans sucking air in, I've added one 80mm side fan also sucking in, on top of the rear 120mm out and the massive 200mm out which sits directly above the Tuniq, I installed the Tuniq so the fan vents straight towards the case 200mm so it's straight out the case asap
Idle temps at stock 9x266 2.4GHz are between 24-26 with all case fans on max and Tuniq fan max, goes upto approx 35 on 3DMark06
