Overweight people getting dressed without looking in a mirror or turning on the lights... Argh god damn you I thought the councilling sessions and the several day binge on a cocktail of drink and drugs had erased all those memories Now I have to start from scratch.

If your looking for boardies your best bet isn't the high street shops you mentioned, you want to head to your local skate/surf shop.

I got cargo style shorts from a big department store beginning with D, and another similar pair when out in the states from thier biggest supermarket chain. Both cheap and quite plain as I rarely have a need to wear shorts being in the UK!

Boardwise have a store in Glasgow, if you can't find a pair of board shorts in there then I rather suspect you'll not manage it at all. I'd guess though that there'll be quite a few independent surf/skate shops in Glasgow that you could try too.
You people are mad, £50 on a pair of shorts!

Mine cost around £50, but then they were made by Columbia and are designed as outdoor shorts not those natty ones from highstreet shops.
Problem with boardshorts is you look a right tit wearing them if you don't live by the sea or are in a very studenty/surfy location. I'd wear them in Plymouth* when I was at uni there but not at home!
*But then 50% of the population wear flipflops in January and surf boards are not uncommonly seen being carried through the city centre.
