Whats worthwhile picking up from America?

Remember he has to get all of this stuff back through customs.
An iPod, a PowerBook no problem - he took it out with him.
Video cards, CPU's, motherboards - not half as easy to get through customs with if you're stopped.

This can be a right "oucher" if you do get stopped - they will often charge you duty and VAT and somehow you will end up paying out about 25% more than if you'd just bought it in this country in the first place...

Houses are much cheaper over there so take your pick and fill this form in
:p

My Sis-n-law came back from the States last month and bought herself a cool Mac Pro 17" - saved a fair amount on it as well!

You do run the risk of being stopped in customs and they have the right to confiscate anything that has not had import duty levied on it! ...once you're stopped then you've pretty much lost it unless you're v.lucky!

I'm american and go visit all the time. I take empty suitcases out there with me, to fill up on baby clothes, trainers, and of course PC parts. My advice is to ditch the retail box, and hide the reciepts as well as you can. I don't declare what I bring in, (you are allowed to bring in up to £300 worth of goods for personal use btw) and just go through the "nothing to declare line" at the airport. If I have to talk to someone, and they ask if I have anything to declare, I say something like "I delcare that i'm glad to be back in the UK" :P

A little joke like that goes a long way. Also, if they ask, just say something like "just this bottle of bailey's I bought on the plane."

I've yet to be stopped, and before my daugher was born, both my wife and I had full luggage trollies as we were going through customs, and I had a BOXED pram on top of my luggage as well. lol.

Another thing is, just go with the "it was a gift from my uncle" or something else. As long as you're not smuggling stuff to sell or massive amounts of cigerettes, you'll be ok.

and remember for PC parts: Fry's Electronics.

Decisions, descisions...

Im probably not going to get more PC parts since my PC is 'OK' for now - though a cheap 8800GTS/GTX would be good (would a Opty 165 @ say 2.4Ghz limit it though?). Wonder if EVGA would allow me the step-up program? Then the replacement card would be UK stock so have to be covered under warranty - no?

The only thing Id like would be a sound card but Im waiting for the XFi Prelude to come out...

I just fancy a laptop which tbh isnt needed so perhaps that could wait (I think Sony Vaio also are international warranty). Im afraid I wouldnt be after an iPod as Im an iRiver/Cowon person...

Whatever happens, Im a yearly traveller to America, so if I miss out this year Ive got Florida to look forward to next summer...
