My sound appears to cut out once in awhile (well not cut out but I need to turn up the volume to hear and then when it works again (sometimes a few seconds later - the volume is really loud then (because I turned it up)).

not the sound card because I just went from a audigy 2 to a new sound blaster z - uninstalled drivers and installed new ones ...

and doing the same thing as it was doing on my audigy - wondering if I need to reformat or do something? ...

I did have a asus dx1 installed for awhile but uninstalled that because of static sounds ... (power connection issues with their cards) - not sure if the sound dropped out before doing this or after ...

any ideas? (all connections appear fine on my spears to sound card ...
would my speakers be going? I have a old logitech 540 5.1 - about 5 years old.

First thing to try would be to uninstall the drivers then to use a driver cleaner to get rid of the remaining files for the Creative and Asus cards. Then try the latest drivers again for the Z.

Possible it could be the speakers, but if it only does it once in a while, it's going to be hard to test them well with another device.

Its not something like "Smart Volume" control is it?

I had similar problems while listening to music. I have a Xonar DG. Noticed i had smart volume on in the asus settings. Switched it off, no problems.

Also noticed it would turn down music automatically if i started watching a youtube vid giving youtube priority on sound.

Could be something similar?

Could also give this a go to see if you have unusually high DPC latnecy levels: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

Best way to lower that down is updating drivers for other parts of the system, such as network and chipset as they can affect the latency.

well first off I had a sb audigy installed - few months ago tried a asus dx1 - didnt work out so went back to sb audigy - and just yesterday sb z

I think Ive had issues with the sound for awhile - before the changes - running a fairly new system here with a format about 6 months ago with all new chipset etc drivers but who knows ... kind of dont want to do a format atm ...

Ill look for a driver sweeper and try updating my other drivers ... hmmm wonder about the audigy thing but the program isnt on there anymore
