I've been away from PC's for a years so i'm now rusty :p
Just got myself an i7 system but think the SSD may be duff? I was getting 31k bad errors so i've deleted the partition and started a fresh but it still doesn't look right? Drive is an intel x25m

Thats definalty not right.
Have you tried another SATA cable, some of the cheeper ones can cause some real problems like read/write errors which could cause what you are seeing.
It could also be the SATA port itself so try another if you have one spare.

Failing that you could try doing a secure erase on it using the Intel SSD Toolbox.

If none of that works post the SMART information from the Toolbox and I'll take a look.
It may unfortunatly as you guessed be FUBAR.

You and I have the same drive I think, aside from the size, although my x25 is 3 years old so they've probably made revisions since then.

Interestingly enough mine doe show BAD errors, whatever that means. Can't say I've noticed a degredation in performance. You have significantly worse write speeds, although your read speeds are better. Either way, something is buggered, and probably more than anything a format can fix. What block size did you pick? Not that they can cause a problem that serious I would have thought.

Tried different sata lead and port with no improvement. The write speed starts around 50mb/s and slowly drops to single figures.
Can i do the secure erase via usb on my laptop? It's my OS drive in this pc.

Here are screenshots of intel ssd toolbox:
