Whats your BMI?

Wahey I'm obese.

bmi.jpg

When I had my last operation on my knee they had to do this. The woman lol'd when it came out obese. I'm not obese. I would say I was slightly overweight, but I carry a good bit of muscle mass, so i guess it doesnt really apply

Shame theres not a method which takes everything into account.

BMI + BF% is what you need. :)

i.e. BMI of 30 and BF < 22% =
BMI of 30 and BF > 22% = :(

22% being the upper limit for "healthy" bodyfat for young males.

Conversely:

BMI of 20 BF < 10% = :(

I need to lose 4 stone to meet my BMI >_< slightly depressing...

I'm slowly losing weight, being more health conscience. Eating smaller portions, limiting junk to as minimum as I can. Trying to be more active, but I don't do any sport/gym. I lack focus in doing and keeping to exercise.

25.5 according to that just overweight :p, I do have a lot of lean mass on me so its not really relevant although I could do with shifting a bit of fat.

BMI is a load of rubbish. Mine says I'm overweight which I'm not.

BMI is not a load of rubbish. If you go to the gym a lot and are 'built' then obviously it's not appropriate but if you are of standard build (i.e. most people) then it's quite useful.

I got 22.6.

18.5 last time i played on wii fit.

tbh iv'e done away with bmi, counting calls and weight measuring. I only eat good healthy food in routine with a five mile daily walk to the supermarket.

Never seem to gain or lose anything

Around 29.5 - but it's a pile a crap as my BF is in the "healthy" zone and I carry a lot of muscle mass. If you read the disclaimer it says it's not suitable for atheletes or sports people or bodybuilders.

freefaller what is the BF% to be considered healthy?
I know i am overweight but BF is the figure i am concentrating on in my weight loss program. (Right now i'm 25% BF down from 29% but still 108kg down from 110kg). According to my BMI of 32 i am severely obese.

Not really, it assumes that weight scales with the square of height, when in fact it doesn't, so the taller you are the more wrong the BMI is. Ie if you scaled up a person to twice their height their weight scales with the cube of height so their BMI would double.

How tall do you have to be for it to be sufficiently bad though?? I'm 6ft 1" and it is fine for me. Do you have to be 7ft or something? Obviously at any extremes it won't be suitable but for the majority of people it is.

I'd always understood BMI as a useful statistical tool for populations rather than something which each individual needed to be measured against, it is far too blunt an instrument to deal with each instant case. Like most things if it is used in the manner it was designed then it has merit, it is when you try to use it outwith its remit then problems occur.

For the little it matters I'm 6'4", ~12.5 stone, BMI of 21.3 and body fat of around 14.8%.

The name itself "body mass index"

it is telling you how dense you are. it doesn't take into account that some people's density will be in the form of muscle, and some as fat.
