Wish we could talk about emulators on here as it opens up a whole bag of retro gaming chatter and how to play the golden oldies. :( Oh well.

But most of them do require some sort of BIOS file ripped from the original console to actually function don't they, and I'm sure that would be under copyright?

AFAIK its not illegal to rip the BIOS from hardware you own yourself and use with an emulator aslong as you don't distribute it - I know a couple of companies that work like that for supporting old production systems where they code emulation of the hardware system and require the end user to either dump a ROM from the original hardware they have in their possession or pay for an official ROM dump that is licensed from the original copyright holder where its available.
