Just curious really. I decided I needed to improve my general fitness about 3 months ago, since I spend pretty much all day (work and pleasure) sitting on my ass in front of a computer. ;) So started running and joined the gym. Well chuffed since they measured my HR(rest) the other day and it's done to 52 (from around 80 3 months ago)

So what's yours?

Well done! At the minute mine is about 62. Can't exercise properly now on account of injury but when i could cycle and play squash it was in the low 40's.

From 80 to 50 in 3 months I doubt it.

Resting heart rate dont mean a thing unless taken into account with a full cardiovascular assessment. ie getting wired up onto a running machine.

Plus people are going to tend to exagerate somewhat.

Mine was 65 a few years back on the back of 2 sub 3.30 marathons.

Taken from Wiki:

At the top of his career, Miguel Indurain had a physique that was not only superior when compared to average people, but also when compared to his fellow athletes. His blood circulation had the ability to circulate 7 litres of oxygen around his body per minute[1], compared to the average amount of 3-4 litres of an ordinary person and the 5-6 litres of his fellow riders. Also, Indurain's lung capacity was 8 litres, compared to an average of 6 litres. In addition, Indurain's resting pulse was as low as 29 BPM, compared to a normal human's 60-80 bpm , which meant his heart would be less strained in the tough mountain stages[2]. His VO2 max was 88 ml/kg/min; in comparison, Lance Armstrong's was 82 ml/kg/min.

29 bpm!!! jeez. One of the lowest ever recorded apparently.

Have no idea what mine is right now, i've not excersised for about 10 years lol. I reckon it would be in the 60's. Would be disgusted with myself if i knew for sure given that i represented my county running cross country and playing footy when in my teens. I was regularly tested and can recall my lowest as being 47. I would regularly get to level 17 in bleep tests and can also recall my VO2 max being recorded as 71! Infact, i'm ashamed just by recalling this.

Well thank you captain negativity. :p TBH though I'm not sure how accurate the original reading was, it was one from one of those blood pressure\heart rate doohickeys. Most recent reading though was "wired up" as part of a fitness test - cycling rather than running though.

When i went to the gym tonight went straight onto the treadmill and i always read my heart rate through it before working out. Off of that and it is usually 120+ tonight it was 150! when i came off after running it went up to 196. I take it the machine doesnt work properly even though it is a good make (life fitness)

Resting heart rate is what it says - resting heart rate. To assess mine I'd lie down for 20 and measure heart rate after 20 mins, do this over a few days and take average.

So I'd be sceptical of a measurement taken in a gym i'm afraid. That said if the 52 is accurate, your true resting is likely to be lower and your initial 80 or so would not have been your resting HR.

Monster wasn't he? Apparently quite a nice chap as well (according to further up on that Wiki article.

Mine used to be 52/min. Now it's about 66/min, I haven't exercised properly in years but am still benefiting from playing sports a lot until I came to University.

When the Ambulance lady took my rate in January it was 42 then rose slightly to 49 (She was Hot)
Not bad for a bloke my age, even if i do say so myself.
