Whats your thoughts?

hi bud, i fancy a change whats your thoughts on this Asus Z77 Maximus V Formula Intel Z77 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-541-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261, good price at the mo

and some gskill trident to go with it, what are they like??? (2400MHz)

If it is any help to you I have the asus board you mention and it is a stonking board - can reccomend it, Although I dont have the ram you mention I believe 8pack reccomends gskill ram for that board as being a good match and good for overclocking.

3820 + top-ish line X79 board, will be a side grade for now but you then have 6/8 core IB-E's to look forward to later this year...

The MVF is a great board, but you have to think is it worth the ~£130 overhead you'll pay to get it (presuming you sell the MPower for ~£100, trust me, motherboards do not hold value :().

My opinion is no, not unless you detest the Mpower anyhow, its certainly not £130 better then the MPower.

Sell up, RIVF/G/E + 3820 now, RIVF + IB-E hex/oct core later in the year ;)

Thx for the wise words paul, that is something i have considered. The MPower is a good board but not great. It lacks features i wish it had and has a few glitches like when i push overclocks to far it enables the IGP, why just dont do it!

Maybe this time i should be a little more patient, gotta be a rampage 5 on the way???

Can you overclock the 3820 though?

Of course you can through the bus/strap

Yep, the sky is the limit with clocks on it, a really fun chip to OC as well due to the MP being locked to 43x, means you have to get used to pushing the BLK and straps, which in turn means you have to adjust the memory etc...

I'm sure I have been hearing some whispers that a RVE/F/G will arrive along side IB-E, 8 Pack will know for sure as Asus are bound to be sending him an RVE for benching :)

That said, once its released, value of the RIVE will go down, so you may even pick one of those up relatively cheap, great boards, bios update will support IB-E.

For ASUS, they are usually at the front of the line with EK, EK and Asus have a fantastic working relationship, which is why nearly all Asus boards and GPU's get blocks made for them fairly instantly :)

Heck if Asus go the same route as they did with the Z77 ROG boards you won't even need to buy waterblocks.

If I had to choose between SB-E and Ivy. X79 is the way to go.

Dont get me wrong the MVF is an amazing board and clocks Trident X G.SKILL RAM very well similarly hit CPU's hard too. For me its in the top three Z77 boards.

You have a good Z77 board though and the socket is dead. 2011 is alive and offers a great upgrade path to Ivy E from Sandy E in the future. RIVE is truly an amazing board too if your going that way.

If it was my money I would go either 3820/3930 and RIVE or RIVF if you dont need quadfire or Quad SLI.

Water cooling chipset etc is totally for looks. Dont waste your time with this unless you absolutely must have a specific look.
