I've just been messing around with some online guides and although my room is small I'm being recommended at 47-55" screen for 720p - 1080p content sitting 8ft away.

Seems on the larger side for me given the distance? I comfortably watch a 37" TV (42" including frame) but move way way closer when playing games.

What's your distance to size ratio?

I have a 1080p 47 inch LCD TV (which by today's standards is old tech).

I sit around 6 ft from the screen and find it about right.

I sometimes get motion sickness (car sick) during a few side scrollers due to screen size. Super Mario World 2 is awful for it.

Cheers :-)

I was initially thinking 40" but the more I'm reading the recommendations seem to be pointing to 47-60"

9 foot and 60 inch

fine for TV but still find a bit small for gaming

hence most of my PC and console gaming I do on a 24 inch Dell in my study, I like being up close

Because you do need a big screen to take full advantage, people under estimate how poor eyes are.

Loads of info on wiki.

Look at the thx ones and if you want opium you want to be at the very low end, of the range. Which at 8ft is off the scale but would be 80" to keep the 40 degree field of view.

Which basically means always get the biggest but still decent panel you can afford.

7ft, 46" 1080p.

About the ideal size for a mixture of HD+SD content at this range.

If everything I watched was HD I would have gone bigger.

My opinion is get a big as TV as possible. I have a 48 inch samsung in my bedroom and it's 8 feet away roughly. Spot on. Living room just go huge. You'll not regret it (just be aware big screen with 1080p and you'll notice more imperfections)

120" projector screen at about 12ft which is pretty much spot on the THX reccomendation or 55" LCD for day time TV.

I have no idea as I've never measured it! For me choosing the right size TV was just as much about getting one that looked right in the room so we went with a 37" if it's replaced I'd go to a 42" as the modern slim bezels mean the actual unit would remain the same size. Don't buy a screen size because a graph on the internet tells you to buy a screen size because it's what suits your space and viewing habits!

We made a mockup of our TV size out of newspaper so we could see what it would actually look like before we bought it, we've done this with various furniture and it has helped avoid some silly mistakes!
