Obviously this was going to happen, even though I'm sure it was denied as part of the acquisition.

What are peoples thoughts on this? Time for everyone to move to something else?

The information we share with the other Facebook Companies includes your account registration information (such as your phone number), transaction data, service-related information, information on how you interact with others (including businesses) when using our Services, mobile device information, your IP address, and may include other information identified in the Privacy Policy section entitled ‘Information We Collect’ or obtained upon notice to you or based on your consent.

You have to agree or cannot use it.

I think the majority of people will fall into this camp. The benefits of using WhatsApp outweigh the pillaging of user data.

We could all switch to Signal for example, but I just don't see people moving over, WhatsApp is synonymous with messaging.

User base isn't it, if no one else moves then there isn't anyone to message so therefore I'd still need to use it anyway.

Me and my friends are now moving over to signal.

Not so sure signal are clean, I put app on my phone and it asked for contacts permission, and then needed my phone number to activate.
It has to have access to your contacts so you can add people and it needs your phone number to confirm it's you. I don't see how else it can work.

I can add someone as a contact by adding their name and userid. (or phone number if it uses phone umber as ID, but there is no reason for internet messaging apps to need a phone number).

Telegram seems better.

Everyone is in the same game, I been on blogs that need your email address to post a reply, same with many news articles, everything everywhere wants you to register.

Telegram is a good alternative.

Herein lies the 'problem' straightaway - Almost everyone already has WhatsApp so trying to suggest an alternative that everyone is happy to use is going to be practically impossible.

WhatsApp is synonymous with messaging.
This.
