WhatsApp mandatory data sharing with Facebook

Well, if Facebook have access to message content (and voice conversation data) then users need to seriously reconsider using this service in a professional context. The amount of handover and confidential information (over voice conversations) is quite staggering within the NHS.

Yeah a key difference is that telegram supports end to end encryption with secret chat, whatsapp however has no such function.

I remember in the old days on irc using a encryption addon in mirc even though the servers had encryption, the addon ensured client to client.

With the encryption, what is there to stop another app (Facebook) on a device looking at the content of the message once its been received. Is has to be decrypted for you to read it, so couldn't another App read it as well?

They don’t read the message content just the meta data.

Here is the thing, if they not reading the content, there is very little left of value, its the contacts, profile data. There is a reason they changed their t&c, so I would be very surprised if no part of the content of messages is been accessed.

If you are really concerned about how they use your data you can raise a challenge to the use of your data under GDPR.

based on your consent.

Why is this so surprising? Our personal data is floating around everywhere, we know this each time we open a web browser and decide to enter information on the keyboard. It's ignorance to think that this doesn't go on more than we think.

It's a bit like an old person who refuses to use internet banking because they fear giving personal information over the internet.. .. so they go to a bank because they can a "real person" but that person behind the counter then uses internet banking..

I was reading the other night that apparently unless you're using secret chat in Telegram they only use server-to-client encryption (so basically just HTTPS) and Telegram can read all the messages on their side, including all public groups I think.

Signal is end-to-end always I believe, as is WhatsApp. Actually WhatsApp uses Signal's encryption protocol (or a variant of).

I'd rather stick with WhatsApp or until most people move to another platform mind.

I’m at work so I can’t post a pic but the Privacy Policy change from Feb 8th just appeared on my WhatsApp so I’ll be moving fully to Telegram this weekend.

I just need to install Telegram on my dads phone which means paying him a visit... and then notifying the group containing my fellow flat members in my block.

These people are scum. They think were all stupid? How does this work? Step one create something useful and if needed run at a slight loss to dominate the market. Step two once you dominate the market suddenly you start to harvest and sell data. And you can even start to demand cash like Youtube premium.

They rely on hassle of swapping, I shunn all SM so used WA as mum and dad use it so it is free but now we have to swap and guess who has to arrange that aka me. There are no good tech firms this is what 2020 taught me those who seek power are nearly always evil, Like a narcicisst!

A very dangerous stance that too many people take too easily.

It means the same as "I don't mind you spying on me all the time with or without my consent" in this sort of context.

Have you read 1984?

Diagro hasn't replied, so I thought I better quote this post as it's marking the dangers of an Orwellian agenda taking precedence.

It costs us £0, we all knew what we were getting involved in. I imagine it costs a fair amount to develop/run WhatsApp.

It's not going to be leaking your private conversations so I don't see it as a problem really.

I would imagine they will eventually merge WhatsApp/Facebook messenger so maybe this is the start of that process.

Yeah telgram isnt ideal either, I think its generally more trusted as it isnt owned by a data hoarding bohemoth, but the secret chat thing should be standard.

Sadly though data is whats valuable these days, especially on smartphones.

Great, do you have the encryption key?

The keys are generated on your phone by the app, they aren't sent to WhatsApp servers; it's why they can't read the messages. Obviously they could backdoor it if they really wanted to.

That's what makes WhatsApp/Signal etc a pain to transfer to another phone, or a pain with their web client when your phone goes to deep sleep and you can't receive/send messages as it all has to go through your phone.

Yeah I agree. We'd all be moaning when every service we use costs £xxx/year because we have to pay for them to incentivise them to run and develop it though!
