WhatsApp mandatory data sharing with Facebook

All of my friends, most of my colleagues and family either happily installed Signal after I explained why I was moving to it or already had it installed.

WhatsApp is dead to me, good riddance to another Facebook owned product.

I don't have Facebook but I did use Whatsapp, I've also moved to signal but not everyone else has, although my family has and a few others, people see entrenched in Whatsapp, but they're also on farcebook

Your account will be deleted and you will never be allowed to sign up to what's app ever again.

It appears you're half right. Your account won't be deleted but you will lose funtionality [messages, calls etc].

According to the BBC:

In an earlier post, WhatsApp said the data it shared with other Facebook companies included:

  • phone number and other information provided on registration (such as name)
  • information about users' phone, including make, model, and mobile company
  • IP address, which indicates the location of users' internet connection
  • any payments and financial transactions made over WhatsApp
But this does not apply in Europe and the UK, where different privacy laws exist.

So does this mean we are unaffected? I'm confused.

I’ve moved over to Signal - they’ve done a great job at making it familiar, but fresh feeling. Important if they want to be successful.

Family are also happy to switch :)

So you ask a question then you answer you own question. Way to go! :p

It means it doesn't apply to people in the UK. I wouldn't trust them at all about this. ofc they harvesting as much data as they can.

Isn't all this completely irrelevant to people in the UK anyway? Why is there such fuss over it?

I do not have a facebook account anyway (never have) but tjis would not bother me.

Well, kind of. But this is an interesting article, from Metro of all places:

A German data regulation body has been scrutinising the decision since mid-April, and finally decided to enforce a ban on the changes under EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules.

The Hamburg official in charge of the move, Johannes Casper, said the new rules are ‘misleading and show considerable contradictions.

He continued: ‘Even after close analysis, it is not clear what consequences approval has for users,’

‘Furthermore, consent is not freely given, since WhatsApp demands acceptance of the new provisions as a condition for the continued use of the service’s functionalities.’

Casper also said that the new rules were ‘scattered at different levels of the privacy policy, they are unclear and hard to distinguish in their European and international versions.’

But as the ban in Germany is only valid for three months, Casper and his team are seeking to bring the case to the European Data Protection Board, which could enforce the ban on an EU-wide level.

That would make all member states exempt from the new privacy policy – in this scenario, Facebook might retract the policy completely for the UK, or leave it as is, leading to a more fractured internet and leaving some users unable to access certain features.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said: ‘The Hamburg DPA’s order against Facebook is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose and effect of WhatsApp’s update and therefore has no legitimate basis.

‘Our recent update explains the options people have to message a business on WhatsApp and provides further transparency about how we collect and use data.’

‘As the Hamburg DPA’s claims are wrong, the order will not impact the continued roll-out of the update. We remain fully committed to delivering secure and private communications for everyone.’

So basically it's intentionally vague wording and people don't really understand it or what it's doing.

They say it doesn't apply to the UK and EU. Then why roll it out at all here? Mobile phone companies roll out firmware via territory, surely Whatsapp could do the same if the rules didn't apply.

I've had a look, and out of Signal and Telegram, Telegram is way swisher, at least in my opinion. Looks very sleek and swish. Some family members already use Telegram but most people won't migrate. They're just too set in their ways.

It's quite interesting, since having a smartphone I've found how, for many people, friendships are platform - and even software - -dependent.

If you come off what's app and move to telegram and people ain't on it then so be it. Might be a good time to have a clear out and a bit piece and quiet.

I tried to move but everyone is using WhatsApp, loads of existing groups that are too valuable.

Gonna say, I'm bit actively worried I don't think? I'm already in Facebook, had WhatsApp, on various other things too....

I've heard of literally no one who has signal or telegram.

Pretty much this, is all well and good switching apps on my phone, but if my social circle doesnt use those apps what is the point?

I do use telegram as I already have a couple of people on there, but family, and other friends all use whatsapp.

Same with facebook really, its a joke of a service but its absolutely entrenched in UK society.

Absolutely, and how willing people are to let tech companies define their interactions with their friends. Example being if you phone someone these days they automatically assume something is wrong, or someone's died.

I have both Signal and Telegram and not many of my friends are on the contact list. Signal seems to ask for my PIN pretty much every time I open it (not very often).

Still no desire to move away from WhatsApp.
