We are off om holiday soon and my daughter has asked if we can get rid of whatsapp on her phone as she knows she will be hooked to her phone messaging and not enjoying herself! And i want to do somethinig similar with work!

So a 2 part question:
  • Can you temp disable all of whatssapp for a period of time and then reenable at a later date?
  • Can you block/make it show that you are offline to certain whatssapp contacts?!

Ta!

You can also set your 'status' message to be "On holiday, back in a bit" and that might offer a clue.
Perhaps also set your display picture to text reading "On Holiday! Not on Whatsapp" and that's a help to anyone messaging her.

Having done that, simply uninstalling it should do the trick :)

Not sure what's possible on your phone m8, but on mine (mi5) I can choose what apps have mobile data and/or WiFi access. Simple task of turning on and off. Wouldn't it just be easy to disable the internet access so the app doesn't update, and then enable access when you're home. Better than uninstalling and losing data.

Just uninstall it. If anyone sends you a message they'll only get the single tick to show it's arrived at WhatsApps servers but not been delivered to you.

I didn't want to uninstall/backup etc in case anything went wrong - also app killers were pretty ineffective (non-root phone).

I force stopped whatssapp and that seems to have done the trick - the second i re-opened the app or restarted the phone the messages came in and the sender got the second tick. So i will just use force stop.

It's no good putting "on holiday" notifications etc, if the work see i have received/read their message they will expect a reply - so best to avoid this possibility althogether.

Thanks all.

You can turn off that feature.

Uninstall nothing will go wrong, just make sure it's backed up, which it usually does periodically anyway go storage. For extra peace of mind and you can back up to google drive also

What kind of monkey business use Whatsapp for business communications?! Set the expectation - "I am on Annual Leave from dd/mm/yyyy, your messages will be not be answered. Urgent requests should be directed to XYZ, everything else, please contact me on my return after dd/mm/yyyy."
Good lord!

Many, many businesses use whattsapp for instant communication - it is very simple for a my office/work colleague to send a 'quick' query.

I know in some areas you are only on duty when you clock in and when you clock off the business can go and stuff - i am paid 365 days a year, 24hrs a day and we also have some high profile projects on the go atm - rather than refuse to answer the message, i would rather play the game of not actually receiving the message in the first place.

I hope you understand my logic on this.

By the sounds of it, you're being paid to provide a service rather than as a salaried/contracted employee. Fair enough. Which means the service you are providing needs to incorporate cover for lack of service or communication. Or you need to set some expectations. Hiding offline just seems to be a reaction to an immature organisational culture. "Bob can answer my question on fiscal year-end, I don't care if he's in the Maldives trying to get some sun"

If you have many high profile projects on the go which you are "vital" for, hiding can't be the best way to deal with it! Whatever solution you go for, good luck. I'm out. I may even be on holiday. :p
