Wheat beer

Been drinking Franziskaner lately, missing some Hoegarrden though.

Love wheat beer.

I asked in one of our locals not too long ago what wheat beers they served and I got a funny look and then asked me what it was. :( Dissapoint.

I've only ever tried a wheat beer once and I wasn't too impressed. Maybe I should try a few of the suggestions here before I give up on it altogether.

My local does Erdinger on draught, which is pretty good. The only other one I've tried that I like is Schneider Weiss Tap7 from Morrisons.

There was another one I had in Aberdeen. It was a guest ale in Ma Cameron's. It was an American beer called Blue Moon. It had all sorts of other stuff in it like orange peel and coriander and oats. Tasted OK but one was enough - got a bit sickly after a while.

just tried my first wheet beer! woohoo. ummm don't like it! the offending item was a co-op branded 5%, light colour, super fizzy and buuurrrppp. tasted like what i would imagine an overly yeasted gone off bread, drank 1/4 pint and the rest went down the sink bluueerrr!

back to my hobgoblin :)

I can't believe it's been a year to the day since I made this thread!! Seems like yesterday! :(

This. Tesco used to sell it. It's odd but nice, kind of like the Orval of wheat beers.

My local Morrisons sell it.

I must have tried the majority of German wheat beers and I have many favorites but the ones that currently float my boat are

Schneider Weiss Tap series, all of them :)
Weithenstephaner Vitus
Schlenkerla Rauchweizen - smoked wheat beer, I believe it's about 50% smoked barley malt and 50% wheat malt. Quite unusual
I'm going to make a smoked wheat beer using 50% smoked wheat malt + 50% barley malt as I can't get the stuff Schlenkerla use.

I tried a bottle of Hoegaarden a while back and it tasted of hotdogs. I thought it must have just been a dodgy bottle but googling it found others who thought the same.

Tbh it's pretty much the worst wheat beer in the world. Try a proper wheat beer and you'll be shocked at how different it tastes :)

After tasting Hoegaarden it's pretty much the only beer I drink now. It's amazing!!!

It's bilgewater compared with the German stuff. I've tried most that are available here, that is Paulaner, Erdinger, Schneider Weisse, Franziskaner & Weihenstephaner. I tried Hacker-Pschorr while out in the USA a few years ago & like it but I can't find it here. :(

Prefer the German wheat beers to the Belgian, Franziskaner is probably my usual I'll occasionally ger Erdinger for a change and I'll get Blue Moon if I fancy something a bit different. The local supermarket sell them all which is handy, they used to also sell Paulaner but I haven't seen that for quite a while :(

One of my favourites was a beer called Flying Dutchman brewed by a Scottish brewery I think, found that on tap in a few places which was cool. Think it was only a limited edition thing though as I could find any when I wanted to buy a load.

If I want to get hammered, Erdinger, if I want something more relaxed and lighter (but still very tasty), Blue Moon.

Lots of nice beers mentioned, my local has a few on tap.

Fun fact, every German beer has it's own specially made glass. So if you are struggling to pour it, try and get the right glass. Back home I have about 30, some official, some hand made and painted.

Erdinger is the only one I've had and I love it! It's just a bit of a bugger to pour as it doesn't need any excuse to fizz up out of the glass and onto your lap!

Need to start with an almost horizontal glass. It's very much an art.

Nice to see Erdinger getting good feedback.

Shame it's so expensive over here. When I end up on the continent I end up bringing 4-5 crates back of it for my dad.

16.99 euros for 20. 0.8495 euros each, works out as £0.72. Whereas it's what, £2.00+ from Tesco?

Amusingly I worked out when I last drove to Amsterdam it was still cheaper for me to drive to the German borders to fill up on beer than it would've been to buy it in the UK.

Mixture of the common Weissbier (Light), Dunkel (Dark), Krystal (not cloudy!) and a crate of one that was some sort of "old style" too.

I took a picture of a huge Erdinger glass. I think that's lost when my Galaxy Nexus decided to wipe its stored files :(
