in my long tradition of attacking simple jobs, and being defeated by the easiest part of all before going on to do the rest fine....

i'm trying to change the brake pads on my car, volvo 440. but, like the subject says, the wheel is stuck on. studs are out, but it just will not budge

have given it a few whacks with a rubber mallet etc, and am having no joy at all. the most annoying thing is, my garage had this wheel off two days ago at MOT time

any ideas? whack it harder?

Yeah, just go and belt it some more til it gives, it'll go eventually. drown it in WD40 might help but I dunno. If you belt it for long enough it'll come off sooner or later.
wd40 near the brakes, i dont like the sound of that

Theres a reason wd40 comes with a long plastic pipe.

Yup, after you crash because of WD40'd brakes you can eat your food through it :)

What Chabsby said works... Not too loosely, you don't need much flex. Couple of mm in my experience. My brother, genius that he is, once decided to try this with about half a turn on each nut and the wheel fell off

i went for the usual approach of having some lunch and forgetting it for a bit...

the other wheel came off easily, i'm too idle to put it back on just to drive around with no nuts. it's clobbering time!

Stand on the wheel brace, the extra weight you've gained after eating might tip the balance :D

put the nuts back on loosely take of the jack and drive back and foward a bit
This is what I do. Except I take it round the block as it is normally the cornering action that forces the wheel away from the hub.
Don't do what one pleb I heard about did and remove the nuts totally before going for a drive...

Stop..........Hammertime

it's off

a combination of pulling with my feet braced against the car, hammering and swearing did the job.

now of course i find that i'm bereft of at least one tool i need for this job
