Wheels 'sticking' when starting from cold

This seems like quite a minor issue, but I wouldn't mind a few opinions nonetheless. Basically, when I start the car after leaving it overnight and try moving forward, the wheels feel like they are 'sticking' quite a bit and are reluctant to move. They will then suddenly release and there will be no resistance whatsoever, almost as if the brakes are clinging to the disks/drums even when the handbrake has been disengaged. This seems to be worse in cold weather.

Does anyone share these symptoms or could possibly shed light on what this might be and whether it is worth doing something about?

Many Thanks.

What car is it? If it has a cable handbrake release then you will feel that the handbrake is loose and slack when you release it as it will be stuck. If you keep pulling it tight and releasing it, you can sometimes free it up. I used to have to do this on my old MR2 until I changed the handbrake cable. Sometimes you can free it up to the point where you don't have to replace it by just pulling the lever up and down a lot when driving along, just not so hard that you lock up the back wheels! You can also test it by not using the handbrake next time you park and just leaving the car in first gear. If it has not seized up on the next day then it is the handbrake cable.

Definitely worth getting the wheels off and having a look. I find that rear drums tend to do this a fair bit especially when the car has sat for a few days.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll try working the handbrake a bit and see if I can loosen it up a bit. (although it doesn't feel any different when I release it as normal in the morning).
Failing that I'll see if I can leave it in first gear one night.

This has only started since that recent really cold snap in January.
