When are AMD prices coming down?

AMD will be cutting prices when, or soon after, Conroe is officially launched. According to Dailytech the price cuts will be huge, with X2 3800+ chips (as an example) possibly dropping to as low as £99.

Hi there

The price drops are on the 512kb cache X2's so that is the 3800, 4200 and 4600. The 4400, 4800 and FX series chips are not dropping in price.

Socket 939 production has ended though so even though prices will drop there may not be stock availability or Etailors may not drop prices and if supply is hard come by then prices may increase.

Whether or not AMD will make these price drops for AM2 is unknown but they may do and there should be no stock issues with AM2 stock.

Bah! Buy a cut-price S939 3700 now or wait and see if there will be cut-price S939 X2s in a few weeks time? Or maybe it will be sooner - the 3700 and single-core 4000 have dropped a lot already. Or maybe, as Gibbo has pointed out, it won't happen at all and if I wait I'll be kicking myself for not buying one of those £95 3700s, which I think will sell out very quickly.

Hi there

Our pricing is mental of the 3700's and 4000's as already its apparent people are buying quantity from us and then just flogging them on Ebay at like £50-£100 profit.

good idea... just cant afford to take the risk of seeing if they are going to sell or not on ebay

Going off the projected price drops over the pond, plus VAT, the X2 3800s should come to around £110-£120 over here.

Are we likely to see them dropping to that, or are we gonna be forced to accept the current price of £170 as a benefit of living in this wonderful country? ;)

Im confident that an X2, with my current system, and a new gfx card, will more than tide me over for a few years or so. :)

The X2 3800+ could go as low as £99 from what I have been hearing, but I would very much like to hear some confirmation from the OcUK staff if possible. :)

im also thinking that - but thing is when conroe is released, there will be lots of people selling their X2's as well, so either way, when conroe is released, the X2 price will drop, new or 2nd hand, and ill definately be getting one :D

Looking at some of the tests a Conroe E6400 equals an FX62 and beats the FX60

Conroe Core 2 DUO E6400 £182.07
Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core FX60 £569.82

AMD have to do something as no way in hell am I paying that price.

Well, I'm going to risk it and wait. My 3000 is overclocked to make it a shade over a 3500, so it does well enough. I want dual-core because...well, to be honest simply because I haven't had a dual-core CPU before :) We're all playing with toys here, so that's as good a reason as any.

But £95 for a 3700 is a bargain and I'll be sorry to miss it if S939 X2s don't appear for sale at low prices.

Maybe OcUK should just flog their 3700 and 4000 stock on eBay :)

Not likely as everyone else has prices lowered now, to the point where the 4000+ is only £140inc. VAT on 2 other sites. I know you like to keep on top of these things.

Also stock of 939 X2's are said to be in good quantity and will untill several weeks after the prices cuts, which will also be happening on the AM2 chips within a few percent apparently.

Id say E6600 competes/overtakes the FX62 but E6700 to make sure...

So AMD have to have a chip thats £250 to compete with the E6600 which they dont have only if they drop FX62 to £250 which they cant do.... so AMD are finished for now maybe for the next 2-3 years its intels turn to offer great value and performance :)

From what i understand, the new K8L AMD architecture should cope with Conroe based stuff very well. But unfortunatelly, its designed as a server chip, and not a desktop one.

AMD have been really dumb on this 1, they new conroe was coming since last 3 or 4 months with all those benchmarks, yet they still keep prices very high

the prices should have been dropped a couple of months ago
as most people with AMD processors will jump ship to conroe

amd are finished for desktop processors for next couple of years
there own fault, and now intel will do the same once they have market back, you will soon see prices going up as there wont be a competitor and its all back to square 1.
