When are AMD prices coming down?

From what i understand, the new K8L AMD architecture should cope with Conroe based stuff very well. But unfortunatelly, its designed as a server chip, and not a desktop one.
So was Opteron. Unless K8L requires (and I mean requires, for technical reasons) a different platform, I don't see any reason why it can't be a "desktop" CPU simply by AMD saying so, or at most a "desktop" version made from it by, for example, changing the memory controller if it required registered memory.

AMD have been really dumb on this 1, they new conroe was coming since last 3 or 4 months with all those benchmarks, yet they still keep prices very high

the prices should have been dropped a couple of months ago
as most people with AMD processors will jump ship to conroe

amd are finished for desktop processors for next couple of years
there own fault, and now intel will do the same once they have market back, you will soon see prices going up as there wont be a competitor and its all back to square 1.

So AMD should drop prices and therefore lose profit because another CPU is on it's way? Right ok.
AMD may as well shut up shop now then I suppose?

Hi there

The price drops are on the 512kb cache X2's so that is the 3800, 4200 and 4600. The 4400, 4800 and FX series chips are not dropping in price.

Socket 939 production has ended though so even though prices will drop there may not be stock availability or Etailors may not drop prices and if supply is hard come by then prices may increase.

Whether or not AMD will make these price drops for AM2 is unknown but they may do and there should be no stock issues with AM2 stock.

god dammit gibbo, i paid the old price for a retail 3700+ on thurs, delivered fri!! :( :( :( get ya deals out a little quicker please

If you're just a little nicer about it and call them up, they might just work something out with you for missing the offer by a hair. ;)

well, i didn't rant or swear did i? :p ;)

i say gibbo old chap sorry to bother you my good man but i missed the offer by the genitals of a very small insect, is there any chance you could work out something for me? there's a good chap

That's better. :p

yes because most knowledgeable people who build pcs are going to be going with the better chips i.e conroe, less watts more power cost less,
better to sell at a loss rather have unwanted chips floating about market, am2 prime example.

The simple fact is that enthusiasts are chomping at the bit for the Conroe - that's going to mean a LOT of good 3800+ and 4400+ X2's dropping onto the second-hand market for the more cost-conscious amongst us ;)

I reckon AMD are doing well they must be fully aware of Intel and Conroe for the past few months its time for them to make as much profit now and right up till the second the Conroes hit stock then they can drop price....

And thats what there doing anyhow there waiting for intel to make there move and AMD will then drop prices and take there back seat.

Im sure AMD will be working hard to play catch up, just like Intel had to for all these years.

The X2 prices have held up high for quite a long time now, which has simply been because Intel have taken so long to catch up sufficiently to provide decent competition. I'm sure you're right that AMD are all ready to drop their prices - they have probably been surprised to be able to keep them so high for so long...

The K8 was designed from the start to be used on desktop and server.
The K8L isnt even on the desktop roadmaps, where as the K8 was.

Its been confirmed around the net AMD to drop prices heaverly after conroes out....

They started to drop few prices already...

It's a reasonable way to reduce losses, or more likely to reduce the amount of reduction in profit.

At current prices, the more expensive AMD CPUs simply aren't good value compared with Conroe. So AMD can either drop the prices to enable them to compete or keep high profit margins but sell far fewer CPUs. Either way, they will have less income. If they don't drop prices, they will lose more market share as well. They will probably also develop a reputation for over-priced kit, a reputation that will stick.

So their best bet is a price reduction, along with some damage limitation and playing to existing strengths where there's a lot of potential profit, such as larger servers (where Opteron scales very well).

If they make the reduction earlier, they will make more sales. They will then have more people who already have AM2 motherboards. People who are more likely to stay with that AM2 kit for a while.

If they make the reduction later, they will make fewer sales. It's not like Core 2 is a secret. If AMD CPUs are still relatively expensive, a lot more people will just wait for Core 2 and buy it on release day.

I think that makes sense.

Do you know of any reason why K8L couldn't be used for desktop as well? Maybe with a different memory controller, since servers generally use registered memory.

Im not saying it couldnt.
But the K8L isnt on roadmaps for the desktop, where as it is for the server.
Where as the original K8 was on both roadmaps.
AMDs 'solution' for the Conroe appears to be the '4x4'.

I think they need a better one, because Intel marketing people would love to be able to say "AMD need to use two CPUs to match one Intel CPU".

I think it would be chancey for AMD to rely on K8 for the desktop market until 2008, unless they can come up with a refinement that allows a huge increase in clock speeds without much more power consumption and heat. Time for them to redraw the roadmaps, perhaps.

Agreed.

But i can see AMD playing catch up for a while, like Intel has been doing for the last few years.
