I do the same when my USB one is not available.I have an internal and when I'm installing I just hook it up and leave it on the base of the case, when I'm done I disconnect and put it away and forget I have one.
depends on os, for xp i think it is just floppy and cd, but for vista you can also use a usb pendrive

dont buy a usb floppy drive if you are installing raid on xp. you need a normal one.you have to load the raid drivers before windows (the Universal serial bus controllers have not been installed yet)
