what can be used instead of a floppy when building a PC?

i.e. - a floppy is needed for installing RAID drivers etc!!!!

khushy

I have an internal and when I'm installing I just hook it up and leave it on the base of the case, when I'm done I disconnect and put it away and forget I have one.

Ya my Floppy is disabled in bios now, only Card Readers show (appear as 4 Removable Drives), but rounded cable is so neatly hidden there is no point me not having it.

depends on os, for xp i think it is just floppy and cd, but for vista you can also use a usb pendrive

Correct.;)
dont buy a usb floppy drive if you are installing raid on xp. you need a normal one.you have to load the raid drivers before windows (the Universal serial bus controllers have not been installed yet)
as posted above, i just use mine for raid drivers, then its put back in the cupboard :D
in vista they have made it so you can use a usb pendrive/stick.......nice one Bill:D

ps. you could make a slipstreamed xp install disk with the drivers already on......i must get round to doing this myself

Are you sure of this? I could swear that I've used my USB floppy for such a purpose.

I still use a conventional floppy.
How many times have we seen on here...my BIOS flash went wrong.

I know it's rare, but to me it's like last chance saloon should something go wrong with the BIOS.
The bootblock just might have enough to get it back with a floppy, and once you've turned it off you've lost that option.
I might add that I normally use a BIOS savior, but you can't use one on the new ASUS boards with the soldered on chip :(

Seems strange they are doing away with IDE channels on motherboards, but keeping the floppy.
