So I went to my dentist today to get 1 tooth looked at a I was worried about a tiny tiny crack and apparently it is not included in your national insurance any more.

The doc said it will cost around 200-2000 depending on the work ?!?!?!?!

When did england become america ?

Odd, I always got checkups done for free, Thought it was part of the reason we pay a national insurance.

Ahh well, Thanks for the info everyone :)

Only for NHS Dentist.

And when he quoted you the £200-£2,000, you sure he didn't mean the work as opposed to the check up? Even private don't charge £200 for a check up.

A lot of people i know aren't even covered on the NHS for checkups. I think there is a limited number of spaces that they can offer??? maybe thats due to a lack of dentist in my area or something.

I have to pay for my check ups, well, through dental insurance.

I'm listed as an NHS customer with our dentist, but still have to pay for everything including checkups. £40 a pop for checkup, which is a reduced amount due to being an NHS customer.

? a checkup as an NHS patient should be £18.50, you shouldn't be paying more unless you need work done.

I had a check-up last week and two fillings sorted on Monday and paid £50.50 for all of it (band 2 NHS price).

Are you sure you're not being done? :p

This!

If you're an NHS patient all the treatments are banded so you pay a fixed amount depending on which band you get done (certain people are entitled to free treatment, under 18s and v.low income types I believe).

Band 1: £18.50 covers an examination, diagnosis and advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, a scale and polish and planning for further treatment.
Band 2: £50.50 covers all treatment covered by Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth (extractions).
Band 3: £219 covers all treatment covered by Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures, such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

If you're being billed differently I'd suspect you're being seen by a privately rather than by the NHS.

You are either being fleeced or you are not an NHS registered patient.

Had a wisdom tooth out a year ago in the hospital from being referred by my dentist, cost me about 50 quid.
You are definitely being quoted prices for private work, which can have its advantages - if you are happy to pay you could have it done within a week whereas you'll be waiting a few months for the NHS.
