When did Ubuntu get so .. good?

It got decent around 8.10 in my opinion, then threw it all away with Unity and gnome 3. Such a shame. Still it got me to onto Arch, much to the rest of the posters on heres delight no doubt :)

Mint is a good alternative if you don't care much for Canonical's flavour of the release cycle but still want a solid Debian foundation and the ease of use. WINE is getting there, but is notoriously picky and patchy still. Virtualization is a better option for some of the Windows based games, tbh.

That'll use Gnome 2, to use Gnome 3 do this:

Oh? I didnt know that!

I assumed ( Wrongly ) that since I was told that there is no visual difference between Gnome 2 and 3 that I was in fact using Gnome 3 ?

I will give it a shot myself...

Thanks for that!

Ah, of course... Add the supository for it... Yeah, thanks for that... I will go it now.
As long as it does not ruin my ubuntu use like Sabayon 6 did to me.... I could not get that stupid interface off once I put it on and it did it twice so I have moved off Sabayon - a big deal for me since its been my main OS since Sabayon v3.5

The classic mode is here to stay for the next few releases at least.

EDIT- I remember reading this info somewhere but i just checked and the package "gnome-session-fallback" needs to be installed for it to work :-( so no classic mode out of the box.

Can we still use classic in Ubuntu 11.10, or have they wrecked that option now as well?

It won't be included on the 11.10 disk, but can still be downloaded and installed. Instead 11.10 will have a 2D version of unity (so basically the same as Unity 3D, but without the fancy compiz effects).

No, that's right, sort of.

In 11.04 if you log on as classic you get gnome 2. In 11.10 you'll get gnome 3 but you won't be able to see the difference.

Above, where everyone is saying "gnome 3", they should be saying "gnome shell". ;)

Will have to grab myself a copy of this and have a play about on a VM.

I've not touched Ubuntu since ~8.04, will be interesting to see just how far it's come.
