It depends on the game.
One of my biggest issues as I get older is the lack of time to play games, but that's heavily compounded by the fact my favourite genre is the RPG. It's very difficult to judge a 50-60 + hour narrative game on an hour or two, I've become far more picky thanks to that and spend more time speaking to like minded friends/checking reviews from people with similar tastes. I have given chances to other games which I honestly thought would be average to terrible, but only when they've been available on Games Pass or were given away by Epic, DA:V and Avowed both fall into that segment. Avowed being "okay" enough to finish the first act before dropping it, DA:V I felt was horrendous in every way that mattered, I'd not have been happy if I'd actually spent money on it.
Anything else I tend to realise whether it's for me or not fairly quickly and will make use of the two hour refund window on Steam, outside of the odd RPG I mainly play small indie games where you can have quick 10-15 minute sessions off and on.
