When lightning strikes….

Can't find it now but there was a video recently of a building site hit by lightning - it was like an artillery attack.

At least they were luckier than this lot...

Yeah I saw that as well - grim.

I guess when you think of people dying like that, you have an idea, but the selfie really captures the awesome power of it. You can make out the outline of their heads… it’s like the end of the world!

They hid under a tree? Is there really anyone who doesn't know you keep away from trees in a thunderstorm?
I know what you mean but it’s a pretty ‘random’ thing to happen to anyone, even if it seems that obvious risks could be avoided by hindsight. You could probably deliberately hide under trees during storms your whole life and not get hit.

This story has probably come forward in part as they don’t want the same to happen to anyone else.

under a tree is horrible bad

tried to tell people on a campsite once setting up under trees is bad

one for insects and the midgie trees shelter them too
two - tree sap and acid run off onto your tent sheets
and three - lightning - ******* death

did watch a cool doc years ago though some mad women in america hit 3 times by lightning - amazing scars like tattoos but daaaamn was she genghis khans cousin or something? 3 times

Thought that was fire not tree leaves, that took me a minute, jesus wept...
Actually that’s really interesting and when I saw it at first… I didn’t see any leaves and mostly fire. Looking at it as you say, there’s definitely some (mostly?) leaves and then some blurring which I assume is fire. I’m not sure whether I’ve misled you!

If it’s mostly leaves (which I think it is) it’s not as scary as I thought! Albeit still scary… I’d take a pass on getting hit :p

@Thekwango did you see it as I did?

Not gunna lie, I thought standing under a tree would be a good idea. Let something taller take the lightning strike.

You may have saved my life OCUK, take that Darwin!

Do you think the worlds population is one hivemind?
There's a bit in-between hive mind and totally autonomy called general schooling - this came up in primary school at least half a dozen times whilst I was there. Do not stand under a tree as the tree can attract lightening.

I guess I was one of the few that read the article though and poor lass has a titanium plate in her arm that likely did the trick, regardless of tree.

They hid under a tree? Is there really anyone who doesn't know you keep away from trees in a thunderstorm?
My thoughts exactly I thought it was common knowledge that when thunderstorms hit do not either be:-

a, The tallest object around
b, Stand under the tallest object around

Many golfers get hit worldwide due to taking a swing and them with the club in the air makes them an ideal conductor

Apparently there are people who didn’t get this drummed into them as a kid. Must be townies as country kids like me that had common land woods to play in during school holidays in the 1970s had our parents, our friends parents and even random adults remind us of this every time it clouded over.

This is about 15 mins away from me, and the in-laws 5 - they had just pulled up on their driveway as the lightening struck - they had to stay in the car for 20 mins as the rain was so heavy and thunder so loud. Quite the storm!!

I think what happened is that it was raining, they hid under a tree - which is quite normal - took a selfie and then an unexpected lightning bolt struck.

Not - oh there's a thunderstorm, let's hide under a tree and take a selfie while there's lightning flashing around everywhere.
