Will this make the i5/i7 obselete? Or will this chip still be of great use to a gamer? Given that the i range will probably drop in price will they be awesome value for money?

If you've already got an i5, then dont worry, when sandy bridge releases it's no as if the i5's will all sudenly become crap. ;)

I've read on here that the lower end SB chips will not be overclockable making them not such good value for money forcing gamers and enthuisiasts to spend more to get what they want.

It'll be a long time before a game needs anything more than an i5 at 4Ghz

Well let's just put it this way. My 4 year old E6300 @ 3.15ghz has yet to be the limiting factor in any game I've played :)

you must game at 800x600 res on 17" screen. LOL

i game at 1920x1080 on a 24" screen & my Q6600 must be OC @ 3.6 in order to play CPU intensive games smoothly, games like the new need for speed & black ops.

That's probably because you are using a 5770. If you look at how much cpu load you are running you will probably find that you aren't anywhere near 100% on all 4 cores at 3.6ghz. Obviously at 2.4ghz stock it would be a limiting factor but beyond 3ghz on a reasonably modern cpu, the limiting factor is the gpu

Thats probably because you dont play flight sims;) Most modern flight sims will send a 3ghz cpu crying home to its momma.

True, but if you look at the quote I was responding to, no flight sims were mentioned, only Black Ops and Need for Speed ;)

I do like to dabble in a bit of FSX when I have time, but no where near dedicated enough to invest in serious kit for it

Fair enough. Im almost exclusively hooked on flight sims so im waiting on SB. IPC and clockspeed are everything for me.

As an aside will there be much difference between socket 1155/1356/2011 for gamers?

Similar to how 15-750 is a more cost effective buy over a 920 if youre just interested in predominantly 1-2 core threaded games.
