Is it pure luck with all batches/retailers on how overclockable a chip is?

For example, some retailers will get a batch of 100 chips, other will get a batch of 1000 chips. Is it still 50/50 on both small and large batches that your chip will be a better clocker?

Not true, different CPU steppings produce differing levels of success when it comes to overclocking.
Yup, overclockability all depends on the batch/week they were made. Sometimes I wonder if certain retailers choose what people get and if retailers have factors towards who gets the better clockers; for instance loyal customers, people who ask for a certain stepping, etc.

Any ideas, anyone?

Silicon quality and thermal design characteristics of the particular core all come into play even the very placing of the Ihs will effect the cpu's ability to everclock. The binning process could also have something to do with it i.e. a variation +/- percent on the efficiency between one testing device and another that are used to test silcon/cpu ability. Hence the good batch bad batch scenario, just my 2 bobs worth :)

30 years ago no one wanted to be the owner of a Monday morning production car! could still be the case today. Well not unless it was a Ferari ;)
