I will be buying a macbook for going to uni next year to study music technology. So, i was thinking when i should buy the laptop. i was looking at mac rumours and it says that an update will be due basically in the middle of the summer. this would be the latest i would think about buying one (end of july start of august). So i was thinking, if there wern't going to be any major updates to the macbook, would it be worth buying now (as it will be the same price in 4 months) or could there be significant updates before then worth waiting for?

Thanks

I would think the Penryn chips will be in the MacBook beginning of June, around the WWDC.

Same thing happened last year with the Santa Rosa chips. But if you need the MacBook now buy it, if you don't, then wait :)

Depends, Penryn processors will filter down into the range this year. However the pro line will get updated first and that may not be until the summer.

At the end of the day, if you need it now, buy it now. No matter when you buy there will always be an update in 6 months so you may as well get your new toy now!

Another thing to note is, if you do buy now, they hold their value very well, so if you decide to sell it and buy an upgraded one in 6 months time then you wont loose much money.

wow, very quick replies. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately i don't need it right now, but i cant wait to get my hands on a macbook lol. i guess i may aswell wait then.

Also, anyone doing music, is Logic Express 8 worth getting or are there better (and cheaper) alternatives?

Thanks

Tunez, you're in the same boat I am, mate. I'm currently saving my pennies for a Mac and didn't know whether to stick or twist.

I've decided to save £800, bite the bullet and buy the entry-level iMac ASAP. If the CPU's are revised in the summer it won't make much difference for my purposes. If there happens to be a wholesale revision on Mac's desktops this time next year at MacWorld then I'll flog my iMac and get the newie if it's good.

At least... that's the plan :p

What is the difference between Penryn chips and what we have now?

About 10% faster clock for clock, a lot faster in applications that use SSE4 and run cooler.

Personally I'd only wait for Penryn if I did a lot of encoding. The C2Ds that are in there are great chips.
