When to change tyres?

Matador!!!! Ewwwww, NO.

Take the advice above, clearly you are an eco friendly hippy too, driving a Prius :p :D so you want to be looking at energy saver type tyres really to make the best of it.
Goodyear efficient grip performance for eg.

HOWEVER....

Winter is coming and you'd be well advised to go for something more suitable for the winter if you can afford to have two sets?
Snowprox / winter contact / winter response etc etc..

Unless you're friendly with a garage aleady who will fit tyres cheaply for you (ones that you provide), then I'd just use blackcircles or similar's fitting service.

Can't go wrong with either of these two..

Continental Premium Contact 5
Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance

Replace two at a time.

If your tyres are all mixed brands, just replace all 4 and it will transform the car and make it safer :)

-I'd check all your tyres to see what sizes they are, they should all be the same size.

You risk yours and everyone elses life, just get them, changed for some good tread. If cash is as problem, go part worn, just inspect the tyres before you put them on. I recently put a full set of 205/35/19 part worns Pirelli P Zero's on my wifes Honda Civic Type R, they still had the coloured strips on them from the factory, couldn't believe it, I doubt they'd seen a road. They were £60 rips fitted and balanced.

Then get the car 4 wheels aligned just so it's all set up, job done for winter and nothing to worry about.

I found a place near me fits Continental EcoContact 5s for sub-£60 a pop. Sounds like a good deal and will save me the trouble of having to buy them myself and take them somewhere to be fitted. I think I'll go with that.

Matador are not a bad make actually, had some MP46 and they were lovely tyres, great grip, however £70 each for one is a total mug, they are not high end tyres.

That's a decent price... the prices I quoted above of £50 for those tyres did not include fitting and was one of the cheaper prices around... so yeah, go for it :D

I ended up getting some Goodyear Efficientgrip Peformances (decided to get both front tyres done) through Blackcircles, delivered to a local garage.

Going in on Tues. Are they supposed to swap the old rear tyres to the front and put the new ones at the rear? Is that something I should ask them to do?

Change that 2mm one asap, especially at this time of year with the poor weather.

Check tracking too, uneven tyre wear is an indicator that its out.

Ive got the goodyear efficientgrip also, they seem pretty nice so far.

Normally they'll check if you're wanting the new tyres fitted on front, or back, etc - but if you want to swap and rotate, then you'd need to ask them to do that.
