When to switch to Windows Vista?

One point I like to bring up about Vista x64 and gaming, reminder really is that you can't run any 16 bit software/games(due to no 16 bit legacy support) so that may be an important factor for you.

There are ways around that like dual booting etc.. but personally I don't use or run any 16 bit software.

I'm aware of that but using 75% of my ram + everything running smoothly is preferable to using 100% of it but having compatability issues :)

im running vista business 64bit (thank you MVLS work license :p) and my manager is running the same but 32bit

so far we've had nothing but trouble from the 32bit one, its been a complete waste of time and hassle using it, i also use 64bit vista at home, 4gb ram, core2 etc same as yourself, i also play COD4 amoung other games and its flawless for the most part

if your really worried about performance or compatability then wait for SP1 but the only issue i can see you having with vista considering the things you'll be doing is watching media, ive had loads of issues with not being able to play DVDs etc though codec packs/vlc etc fixed that

Or should I just not fix what isn't broken and stick with XP?[/QUOTE]

Indeedy..

Maybe you should ask yourself the following:

Why are you considering changing to Vista - what benefits are you expecting to receive ?

If you are happy with XP then stick with XP - its a fantastic operating system. I work in IT and will leave it until they stop supporting XP before I move over and even then it will be a wrench doing so..

Vista sadly (pre SP1) offers no extra functionality for me that I need and im pretty much the same as you when it comes to usage..

Yep its down to what you want out of the OS in question,DX10 and even DX11 down the road will become important for future gaming ,security improvements, superfetch etc...are nice to have but do you need them?
I use to be happy with DOS 6.22 and gaming ,but then I'm going back a few years.

Vista was great for me - never really had any issues, no more than XP that is.
The reason why i say " was great" is because recently UT3 came out, and the difference in performance for that specific game was massive, literally shocking difference.

All other games were perfect, even the ones using the UT3 engine, like Bioshock etc. which is kinda weird.

I'll go back to Vista as soon as that is sorted

You can't blame a UT3 fault on vista though because the rest of us have no issues in UT3 on vista - the problem lies elsewhere on your configuration and you've just "tucked it under the sofa" to hide th eproblem :)

I have a copy of Vista 64, it came on a CD with licence with a new PC for my Dad but he likes XP (only recently upgraded him from Win 95! - Seriously!)

I have an old A64 3000+ Single core CPU, 2.5GB DDR 400 RAM so I assume Vista 64 Bit will work ok for me?

Or should I stick with XP & wait until I eventually upgrade the lot?

I have been using Vista on friends computers and am quite impressed with it. :)

one way to find out is try it. :p

as i mentioned above, i'm running on a single core/2gb ram and it's fine. YMMV though. it might run like crap on your setup. :D

install it without entering a product key. then you can try it for 30 days without having to activate.

I've got Vista on my PC (specs below) and it's been mostly fine for the past several months. Also put Vista on my notebook about two weeks ago (Pentium-M 1.73GHz, 1GB of RAM) and it runs surprisingly well also, albeit without Aero. Certainly proves you don't need a bang up-to-date machine to handle Vista well.

Now that's sound advice, I will have to sell my PC, sell my two children into slavery, my kidney, re-mortgage my house, and still short of a few bobs for a shiny new Mac :o
At the end of the day, it's your call, one doesn't know whether Vista is crap/brilliant until he tries it out, the 30-day trial is there for a reason.
If hardware can support I can't see a reason not to.
Vista bashers please go somewhere else, I have been running Vista with SP1 RC for weeks now and it seems to be a lot more stable and activation problem has also been sorted.

Either stick with XP, or as a far better option: http://www.apple.com/getamac/

Am I right in saying Business doesn’t include any media functions? I.e. Media Player, photo viewer etc? Unless you use 3rd party apps you’re stuck.

Excellent OS :D Being using Ultimate for a year now and wouldn’t dream of going back to xp, gets my vote go for it!!

Its funny, I wouldnt use it on its own, but I've just gone back to XP and I miss the Media Extender in HP linked to my 360.

This thread makes me want to reinstall Vista, but I only installed XP 3 days ago! Damn you lot :p
