When would be the best time to upgrade? i know the next gen gfx cards will be coming out not sure when and what will be the next best thing to conroe? just not sure when the best time to upgrade will be, will next generation stuff wipe the floor to what we have today? and im not talking any further than the next generation gear.

There is always something newer and better around the corner. Conroe is the king of processors so I would go for them if buying soon. The new quad core version (Kentsfield) is due December..

Graphics wise.. there are some very fast cards out by ATI and Nvidia already, however the new DirectX10/Shader v4 cards are due in the coming months..

If I was buying in the next few weeks, I would go for Conroe with either ATI X1950 or Nvidia 7950.

It depends on your own situation too. Is your current rig really struggling? Will you get a few more months out of it? Do you need to upgrade all of your components or just a few? Will you have a bigger budget in a couple of months?

In my own experiance, a CPU or graphics update has usually required changing a few other other pieces of hardware too - due to forever changing Socket/Slot/Memory standards. In light of that I usually try not to worry too much about the future.

Usually by the time you wait for a new standard, like DX10/Vista/BTX etc, there's already something new on the horizon. Also, its prudent to remember that the expected release dates for these things usually slip back a bit. Its very difficult to predict PC technology, because its constantly on the move.

If you need a new rig now, then now's the time. If you want to wait a bit, or do a minor upgrade to tide you over, than there you go :)

Cheers for the replys, moving house and made a nice little number on the flat ive just sold, so want to wait until all moved in and the money is there to spend, my current rig is ok but to upgrade a lot needs changing this is my current rig.

AMD 3500+ Newcastle
Abit av8 3rd eye
Tagen 480w psu
Antec black piano case (id like to keep)
1 gig (2x512) crucial ballistix
74gb raptor
250gb WD Caviar SE16
Galaxy 256mb 6800gt gfx AGP

Now id like to keep as much of that as possible but i want a rig that will run future games like crysis at top settings without struggling. Im good to wait 2-3 even 4 months for the upgrade but the wait be worth it? :D

will the next generation dx10 gfx, cpus etc be a massive improvement over what is about now? not really followed up with the latest generation of goods so any advice will be helpful on what we have and what we are all expecting.

TIA

The problem you have is that you'd need to either get cpu/mobo/ram/gfx or get just cpu/mobo [with agp and pci-e]/ram.. and get the graphics card later.

Im not really hoping for the NExt GEn Quad Core Kentsfields or AMD's piece of the puzzle. i think a core 2 Duo will last for a good while (how can you use 4 cores...) im really hoping on the next gen gcards, i think they will blow every fish out the water. Hopefully they wont be stupid prices but yeah i think the next big thing must be DX10 and SM 4.0 more cores imo wont really make a difference to my game.

Ok keeping as much of my current system but moving to next generation components what would you people recommend upgrading/waiting for if you had roughly a £800 budget?? also what would i get for the left over parts if i was to sell them on if anyone has any ideas?

Cheers

With an £800 budget you can do an awful lot!! Have a look at the other 'spec me' threads here - people are putting together some cracking systems for less.

If your worried about dx10, you could always do a full mem/cpu upgrade, but with a budget gfx card. Then you can upgrade that in 2 or 3 months when dx10 technology settles in a bit....

I'm kind of in the same boat as u. AGP, socket 754, and some tough upgrade choices. In the end I decided to buy a 1900xt with a new pci-e mobo for my old 754 cpu - all for less than £230, and I even got to throw in a new cooler for some overclocking :-) That means i keep my old A64 3400+ and 2 gigs ram. That system should tide me over well past winter - because I'm a gamer who's more than delighted to play games at 1280*960 with a just bit of filtering.

Think about what you use your system for, how much power you need, and how much you're willing to spend and when - you'll come up with something great with a bit of help from everyone here :)
