Which edition do you plan to shell out for??

As i understand it ALL versions will be on the dvd and will be unlocked depending on which key you have, I dont think there is a price list out for each edition yet but all the various ones have been named, Ultimate being the highest.

Another question is what happens for those of us who have 64-bit processors, Will vista give us a choice or just go 64-bit from the off? Either way i hope 64 bit vista drivers would be more readilly available, been a while since i looked but if u had a canon printer/scanner and xp64 u were screwed.

Whats your thoughts ?

Andy

I would hazard a guess that 64-bit will be on the disc as well as 32-bit, to encourage uptake (and also so you don't have a shell out again if you upgrade!). We'll have to wait and see though...

I'm probably going to plump for Utlimate - this is mainly because I want the Media Center & Multimedia functionality that Home Premium offers, but I also need the domain functionalities of the Business versions to log into Server 2003.

64-bit will be on the same disc and will be an install option.

I'll get whichever edition my company gets from its MSDN subs.

I really don't know, they don't seem to offer anything that xp doesn't.

Amen.

TBH I think by the time people NEED to get vista linux would have evolved enough for people, even gamers, to make a seamless transition (at least thats what I'm holding out for, I dont want to be touching Vista with a very long pole! as per barnettgs opinion)

All the talk of dx10 not being available for XP is a load of rubbish, it was the same with dx9, but they published it for 2000.

Worst case sinario, MS royally screws up and we all get mac's :p

Err, no it isn't.

DX10 integrates very closely with the completely new display model in Vista. It would involve a hell of a lot of effort to port it to XP and before. There are far more underlying differences between XP and Vista than there were between XP and 2000.

EDIT: If you want to see some of what Vista will offer you over XP, have a read of http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1931913,00.asp

It's likely someone will eventually port dx10 to xp as theres so much demand for it. Up to now I haven't seen any reason to upgrade to an os that uses 700MB of ram when idle.

Or linux :) If it is crap, I might repartition my drive so XP is only for games and Linux has a bigger partition for everything else.

Home Premium here.

I don't plan on gaming on the pc anymore as I have a 360. So all I require is an OS for general office use, internet browsing, watching/listening to vids/audio and networking.

I would love to go for the Ultimate edition, but I think its gonna have a hefty price tag. I think I will be going for the Home Premium version, proberbly along with the majority :)

Most likely Home Premium for me, but it really depends on what, and if, my uni's MSDNAA offers it.

If they don't, I'll most likely get Home Premium anyway, whenever I can afford it :p

Loads of new or improved stuff. Do some Googling and you will see.

That's not likely at all.

That's a good thing. Free memory is wasted memory.

Same way that at the time, XP didnt offer anything over 98/Me.
If everyone took that attitude, then we'd be making no progress at all.

Not considered that the 700Mb its using is prehaps the textures for the new Aero system? Or that it is a beta version and memory usage will probably drop on release? Or that it doesnt really matter how much memory is being used as long as the system remains smooth! ;)

Ive been playing around with Vista 5183 today on my laptop, and ive got to say, im very impressed with it upto now, everything is very snappy feeling.

Vista isn't huge progress though. Windows xp was a lot more stable and easy to use than win98/me, I can't say the same for vista in my experience the opposite is true.
