We all know the new DDR4 RAM is going to be an awesome new upgrade but when can we expect it to trickle down from the enthusiast to the more money-conscious gamer? X99 motherboards will be out soon for the Intel 2011 socket but when are we going to see stuff for the 1150 socket (or next gen equivalent)? It's coming to that time in my PC cycle that I'm going to start looking at upgrade parts next year so it would be good to get some more details on this!

If you're not going to the LGA2011-3 platform then you'll be waiting until Skylake in 2016. By which time DDR4 i'm sure would have decreased in price, how much though i don't know.
Wow. That seems like an awfully long time! So DDR3 would still be good for at least 2015? I might just get some extra RAM now and wait for 2016. Currently on 8GB but more would be good for video editing that I do.

For main stream yes. There are plenty of good 16Gb kits of DDR3 out there, worth picking up a kit soon i'd say.
I can't really remember what happened regarding the time scale of DDR2 -> DDR3 if i'm honest.
I don't think you should worry too much about the memory part so much as the chipset. So a better question would be when will a platform that supports DDR4 become more mainstream? DDr4 prices will most likely drop pretty rapidly as apparently a lot of factories have stopped producing DDR3 and are switching to DDR4. Basic supply/demand.
