When will game developers start using blu-ray media?

Hey guys I had a thought the other day (yes it did hurt :p)...

As we all know the Playstation 3 uses (or can use) blu-ray media be it for movies or whatever. This got me thinking in that chances are the new Xbox will probably be BD enabled as I think the new Wii U is (though don't quote me on that). So the question becomes when will PC game developers start doing the same thing? Take Fallout New Vegas for example, fantastic game but the main story is a little on the short side yet only comes on one DVD9 (just over 6GB) now personally I find this pitiful to say the least! Tiger Woods PGA Tour used to do the same in that only have a DVD5 would be filled!

Come on game developers now is the time to start using all the media disc you pick!

Anybody have any thoughts on this one?

They won't need to due services like Steam and Origin. Download massive games without the need for any physical media.

I'm waiting for the box set of The Simpsons seasons 1 - whatever number it ends with on 1 disk, I'm sick of boxsets taking up and entire shelf lol, I want 1 disk with EVERYTHING on it lol

I am not up to speed with Blu-rays but doesn't the technology belong to Sony?

I am not sure if that would effect the cost of creating them or not but you've also got to consider the fact that every PC can play DVD's, but how many people have blu-ray on the PC?

Not quite sure it'll work like that, my futurama season 5 set is on 2 blu-rays for 13 episodes so a simpsons season will still need 3 or 4 ;)

Shame as my simpsons dvds take up quite a lot of space!

Plus I dont want a blu-ray drive for my pc

Agreed, even IF it became the standard and replaced DVD's it won't be for a few years yet, and like someone said, downloading is quickly replacing the need for an optical drive at all, just like the DVD burner I have in my PC thats never been used, I just external hard drives or USB drives if I want to copy/backup stuff.

A quad layer Blu Ray disc can hold up to 128GB of data, you sure there's more than 128GB of episodes? when you consider the average file size of 22 minute episode is 175mb? even a 720 rip of a 22 minute tv show is only around 500mb, ok so Maybe the simpsons would need a couple of disks, but surely 4 discs is better than 3 discs per season lol

It will never have the penetration of DVD. Online services now on the PC will make sure of that. Publishers don't like piracy, a console with no optical storage and always on DRM like Steam/XBox Live would be a wet dream to them. Shame the whole world let alone the UK doesn't really have the internet infrastructure for it to be seamless. ~50GB downloads for some would be a real PITA

yeah i dont think it will happen on pc, and if it does im not going to upgrade for it. I'll just buy from steam.

theres very little point, its not like its going to make the games any better by putting them on blu-ray

its not like PC games really have a limit to thier size. If they need to be bigger, they can come on 2 DVD's
or even download parts of it if needed

As others have said - with faster internet and more always on services like Steam and Origin there's little point.

Also, most of the time you'll have to download large patches anyway,., half the time I don't even bother with the disk and just use the code. I did so on even say Skyrim, I just put the code into steam and let it download the day before.

Only reason I bought a hard copy is the store I got it from was a few pounds cheaper than Steam and I got a map :p

Will only happen on PCs when film DVDs are withdrawn and everyone is buying Blu Ray. Although what do you use the DVD drive for at the moment? Recording DVDs to show on a DVD player? Backing up your drive? Storing photos?

As storage requirements get bigger (higher resolutions images, larger hard drives etc) you would imagine the optical drive would increase in size to accomodate, unless it's overtaken by 'cloud' storage, flash drives, etc. I guess thinking about it, its more likely flash drives will replace optical media.

When they changed formats in the past, it was beacause it was needed badly at that point.

Games were coming out on 10+ floppy discs by the time CD's came around.

Developers then went nuts with all that extra space by adding FMV, and it wasn't long before we had games like Wing Commander IV which came on 6 CD's.

I don't know of any games that come with a stupid number of DVD's. Even the biggest games can fit on 1 or 2.

Blue ray still costs to much for developers they can add multiple standard dvds for the price of 1 blue ray.

Also like people have said downloading will become mainstream at some point and because of this blue ray disks will probably get skipped altogether.

Like others, I suspect that Blu-Ray will never be used as a software distribution medium for games. I do however think it's about time Windows started coming on USB sticks instead of optical media.
