I like my PS3 because of the exclusives and i have a lot of friends on their who play cod. However i have a top end pc and the console looks extremely dated with horrid textures now. 60fps at 1920x1080 with 16AF and AA is need for the next gen of consoles.

Any idea on new releases?

No one knows, and anyone that says different is guesing.

But yes, the next gen of consoles will be up there with todays PC games, but then shortly after PCs will take over again. Consoles will never beat PCs in terms of graphics.

I hope it's at least a couple of years yet. The longer the better. If they released it anytime soon, it wouldn't be a worthy upgrade, especially to the man on the street. As for 60fps 1080p; that would be great but I don't think they will opt for that mainly because you need a lot more power to do that and also because they could make a much better looking game at 30fps 720p because they could use much better textures etc which is why they don't (99% of the time) do it now.

Who knows for certain? I'm going to guess, and this is for Sony, that they announce they've been working on and a prototype is up and running sometime around late 2012, early 2013. With production and general release pencilled in for sometime around Christmas 2014.

Hopefully we'll see full backwards compatibility with PS1, PS2 & PS3 titles and even a NVG card slot.

I really hope they add proper backwards compatibility this time round.

I seriously hope they don't!

It would simply impare and hold back the technology. Live with it, move with the times.

When you can have all these wonderfull new graphics/engines, why on earth would you want to play crappy looking games on it.

If you still want to play them, do it on the old console!

Well, I guess some people are as tight as a nats **** though.

Me too, something I rarely scrutinise are graphics nowadays, gameplay is all I'm bothered about, however If I bought a game and it looked like Minecraft I may kick up a fuss.

ditto, well the part about minecraft i would disagree with :p

its just a shame game dev's dont put as much work into the gameplay instead of fancy graphics and 4 hours playtime

I think that for the first time there needs to be a really good launch of games to get people to buy a new console, rather than just the hardware. We only need to look at the Nintendo 3DS to see how that launched without a good selection of games and clearly didn't sell as good as they had wanted.

I would imagine that Sony and Microsoft will want to launch it with one of their flagship AAA franchises.

I'll tell you now, most games of the next generation will not have 60fps, will not have 16x af and will not have more than 4xAA.

Simply put, the majority of gamers couldn't care less and don't even notice that those items are missing. They see something like Uncharted 3, or God of War and are more than happy with both and with good reason, both look fantastic. Sure they could look better on the PC, but would make them better games? Is a great game only great if the graphics are fantastic?

I'm willing to bet that 95% of the people that own a 360 or a PS3 couldn't tell you what was different between 30 and 60fps if they saw it on the screen.

What people notice is more bells and whistles, more sparkly bits and more effects. Those are what developers look to put in a game at the sacrifice of fps.

Some will be 60fps sure, GT6 or 7 will aim to be, probably some of the shooters will aim to be. But the majority of games won't and it wont affect sales one iota. And that's why they are in this business.

One of the long-standing sacred cows here at Insomniac is framerate. We've long viewed a solid framerate as both a sign of a quality product and professionalism as developers. It's always been point of pride in our work and considered an extremely serious part of our development process," wrote Insomniac's Mike Acton in the developer's official blog.

"However, during development, there are hard choices to be made between higher quality graphics and framerate. And we want to make the right choices that reflect our commitment to providing you with the best looking games out there. To that end, our community team did some research into the question of framerate. The results perhaps confirmed what I've known for a long time, but found it difficult to accept without evidence."

The community team's findings suggest that a higher framerate does not significantly affect a game's sales, nor does it affect revew scores. However, graphics do have a significant impact on the final review score, and can even affect the gameplay, with gamers perceiving better looking games to be "more fun."

Based on these and other findings, Insomniac has come to the conclusion that framerate is "important, but not critically so. When there is a clear choice between framerate and improved graphics, graphics should win. The correlation with review scores is clear."

So what does all that mean? According to Acton, "It means that framerate is still important to us here at Insomniac, but it's not on the same pedestal it was before. And that Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time will probably be Insomniac's last 60 fps game."
