When will these people ever learn?

Had to have an awkward conversation with my father (mid sixties) who had met a French woman online, he was all giddy about it, 'she' had told my father her daughter had the same name as his mum and all this other waffle that was pulling at his heart strings. Luckily he hadn't committed to anything and a quick google of her name, facebook account and email there were many victims.

Honestly I have restricted and monitor my kids online usage now I need to do the same for my father :p

It is a sad state of affairs when someone vulnerable and lonely falls for a sophisticated romance scam. It is even more sad when someone who can't keep their UberEats account secure feels the need to create a thread calling the victim dumb.

desperate and lonely more like
This 100%, men are even worse with the 'Thai bride' brigade, someone I knew 'fell in love' with one, cost him over £10k to get her into the country and she has since fired out a litter of kids for him, had to laugh as when she came over for a 2 week visit he literally toured the country taking pictures to try and make it look like he had been in a relationship with her for years.

What was so sophisticated about this?

She never met the person ever. Surely that's as unsophisticated as it gets?

Had they met and he had played her along and showing her how he makes money by buying stuff cheap from a source and then she sees him make £200k from a £50k investment. She then decided to also do the same and hand him the £50k as the source doesn't trust new buyers, etc that would be a much more sophisticated scam than simply sending messages over the internet?

I know someone who fell for something similar, he was an alcoholic who worked 2 jobs (one for the council in their offices) and another cash in hand (for someone I know) a desperate for money polish bird saw him as an easy target she slept with him a few times and then she started telling him that she has a kid back home and she has to send money to feed him, etc. He then starts sending her money and then this goes on for a few months then she moves back to Poland. At this point he's not getting laid and he's still sending her money. When he told me all this I was like how could you possibly fall for this, he was an intelligent bloke but obviously mentally unstable and desperate and he played right into her hands.

He had to do that to convince the authorities they had been seeing each other for years and it was a love marriage.

It's in the human rights act you cannot deny love to anyone so all these immigration policies don't mean squat and a lot of people have been playing the system through either money marriages, scam marriages or family / connection marriages.

Pakistani community does it a lot as they tend to marry their cousins so they get their daughters married off to cousins from back home. They keep doing this until the whole family is now over here as they cannot get over through other means.

At least the Thai bride has intentions of staying with him and seems like love if she's popped out several kids.

She could have after she got her green card said bye and gone off to do her own thing.

I have nothing but sympathy for any victim of fraud. Successfully pulling of a fraud of this type requires an ability by the fraudster to identify those in society vulnerable to their overtures. I think it's difficult for those of us who are immune to the said overtures to understand how a person can believe them but it must be remembered that we are not the target.

I suspect most of us have a vulnerability that makes us somewhat more vulnerable to a particular type of fraud, though most of us never meet anyone who is able to identify and exploit that vulnerability or we have people around us to protect us from ourselves.

Finally I would add that No one likes to publicly admit they messed up like but when stories like this are made public, they might help others identity they are being exploited, or provide ammunition for friends and family as they try to persuade someone they are being exploited. That can only be a good thing so I'll avoid taking the Mick last it make others more reluctant to come forward or makes it harder for someone to admit to themselves they are being exploited for fear of being ridiculed.

Post of the day

A friend recently met a new lady, was going well, few dates/hookups.....then he googled her. Turned out she has a long history of long con romance scams, hooking up with people, rinsing them to feed her "insta" lifestyle, previous jail time, articles on the daily mail.

See if I was in his shoes I'd play along and see if I could scam her and then it would be sweet as if it worked.
